In a shocking twist of events in Metaphor: ReFantazio, Grius has been turned from the grizzly and reliable veteran solider in your party to an unfortunate boss battle as a member of the undead. The character's death following his failed attempt at assassinating Louis at the Royal Funeral was surprising enough, but now his battle-hardened skills, and some new ones, will be used against you. While this is not a multi-stage battle, the battle-hardened zombie-like warrior can make for as tough a fight as when he fought alongside you in the events of the game until now.

While Grius no longer has the ability to use any of the Archetypes in Metaphor: ReFantazio as he did before, his moveset can take any player who is unprepared by surprise. He has one multi-target attack, "Phantom Dance", and a basic single-target strike attack. It's a limited pool of skills, but an effective one if you aren't ready. With the right strategy based around your new party member, you'll quickly be able to dispatch Undead Grius and watch your old friend rest in peace.

How To Beat Undead Grius In Metaphor: ReFantazio

Use The Knight's Skills

Using the Jump Thrust Knight Synthesis skill in Metaphor: ReFantazio against Undead Grius

To defeat Undead Grius in Metaphor: ReFantazio, you need to use Hulkenberg's new Jump Thrust Synthesis skill of her Knight Archetype and her standard skill, Knight's Proclamation, to draw his attention to her. The newly unlocked ability to use Synthesis skills allows you to combine the powers of two party member's Archetypes to make for devastating blows, by costing an extra Turn Icon. Along with Jump Thurst being an incredibly powerful attack compared to others you have been able to use in the game up until now, it also lowers the target's Defence stat every time the move is used.

The Knight is resistant to Slash damage, so using Knight's Proclamation to draw Grius' attention to Hulkenberg will save the rest of the party a lot of HP.

Such prowess is what makes her one of the tougher Metaphor: ReFantazio characters. Whether to use a Synthesis skill should be assessed carefully though. That's because not only does it use up a Turn Icon for both party involved, but it also consumes the MP cost to use a move like Jump Thrust as well. So, you should only be sure to use such a move if you're not planning on having the second member of your team use any particular Archetype skills during that turn.

The Weakness Of Undead Grius

Light Up His Afterlife

The Light weakness of Undead Grius in Metaphor: ReFantazio

Among the skills and items you'll have available in Metaphor: ReFantazio at this point, Undead Grius has a weakness to Light damage, so you should have your protagonist use the Healer Archetype and have Strohl use Warrior, in addition to Hulkenberg Knight. Healer has Hama, a Light-based attack as an innate skill, so it is a no-brainer to have this cleric-like Archetype in your team as well. As its name implies, it can also learn the healing skill, "Medi" at Rank 03.

Healer is great to use here since it offers the best of both worlds, inflicting super-effective damage against Undead Grius while healing your party whenever you need to. Strohl is still best using the Warrior Archetype here to pepper in extra blows with his Slash attack. Since this a single-stage fight and you can use the Knight's Proclamation of Hulkenberg's Knight to draw single-target blows away from him, you don't need to spend MAG unlocking a different Archetype for him beforehand.

Undead Grius Boss Fight Rewards

Money, MAG, EXP, And A Memento

Getting Grius's Memento as a reward from Undead Grius in Metaphor: ReFantazio

For defeating Undead Grius in Metaphor: ReFantazio, your rewards are 250 EXP, 150 A-EXP, 1800 MAG, 2000 Money, and the item called "Grius's Memento". There are no itemized rewards aside from Grius's Memento but the MAG will be enough to afford buying Archetypes for some of your party. The EXP could also push any of your to the next level. As for Grius himself, his ending is bittersweet, temporarily regaining control of himself before his final death to say he leaves the prince and Maria's home in your hands.

Hulkenberg channels his words, affirming the party will indeed protect both Maria and His Royal Highness. Following a cutscene where the protagonist destroys the black Magla crystal, the three return to the Hushed Honeybee to check in on Maria and Fabienne. For those playing beyond the Metaphor: ReFantazio demo, this section of the game is a rather sad one altogether. Just to make use of Hulkenberg's new skills and to absorb damage, and that Undead Grius has a weakness for light damage, and this quick but sad Metaphor: ReFantazio boss fight will end with victory becoming yours.
