My Hero Academia's heroes are often required to take incredible risks in order to protect humanity and defeat villains, and the series' main character, Izuku Midoriya, is no different. Deku may have started the series as a weak, Quirkless individual, but over time, he became one of U.A. High's strongest heroes, and the main trait that helped him accomplish this task is his courage.

Since his childhood, Izuku has been exceptionally brave and determined to emulate his hero, All Might. At times, Deku's persistence has led him into dangerous situations and even caused him physical harm. Despite these setbacks, he never wavers in his resolve to save others and is willing to face any risk, earning him the reputation of anime's most unhinged hero.

Deku’s Resolve Is Unshakable, No Matter the Personal Consequences

Even When One for All Broke His Arm, Deku Refused To Give Up on His Dream

His famous quote, "I'm the Deku who never stops trying!" summarizes Izuku's personality and intentions perfectly. Even when others have warned Deku against certain risky decisions or encouraged him to give up, he often refuses to listen. For example, when Deku first inherited One For All from All Might, he was unable to use it properly, and any time he did, it damaged his arm severely. He did not let this setback hinder him, and continued practicing, even when it broke his arm. Few heroes would be willing to shatter their own arm for the sake of their mission, but Deku was unafraid to.

My Hero Academia's Deku Was Originally Much More Pathetic

My Hero Academia's Izuku Midoriya was a pretty pathetic character at first, and in the precursor story to that popular series, he's even more so!

Deku's unwillingness to give up helped him eventually master One For All and even learn new ways of channeling the power through his legs to prevent further damage to his arms. His headstrong nature may seem hazardous, and it is at times, but it is ultimately a beneficial quality, since it allows Deku to become a stronger hero. His resilience in the face of adversity is not just a personal asset though, it has aided others time and time again throughout the story, including even a character who was not very kind to Deku at the beginning of My Hero Academia: Bakugo Katsuki.

Deku saving Bakugo from My Hero Academia Season 1 Episode 2

When Bakugo was kidnapped by the League, and others were hesitant to rush into the villains' lair to rescue him, Deku was fearless. Even knowing he was going up against accomplished villains who had defeated Pro Heroes, he still risked his own life to rescue someone who had only ever bullied him in the past. This was not even the first time Deku rescued Bakugo, because he also took action when Bakugo was captured by the sludge villain. Even though Deku became trapped in the villain's grasp himself, he never regretted his impulsive decision to the battle, and All Might wound up saving them both.
