Why Michael B. Jordan & Ryan Coogler’s Next Movie Could Be Their Most Interesting Yet
Previously, it was reported that Coogler and Jordan’s movie would be a “genre” film. Sources also pointed to it having a period piece element, though did not specify in what time period it would be set. The added information of the project being a vampire movie could mean a Victorian setting, or a number of other Gothic-leaning eras. Alternatively, the film could genre-bend by setting its vampiric plot in the context of some iconic 20th century era such as the 1920s.

This movie will mark the fifth director-actor collaboration between Jordan and Coogler. After his breakout independent film Fruitvale Station, Coogler transitioned his work with Jordan to be more focused on blockbuster filmmaking, especially with his dive into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While the exact details of the new production are unclear, including the results of the bidding war, it seems that their next film together will stray away from their more conventional Hollywood fare.
This project could be an interesting combination of Coogler’s filmmaking talents. While Fruitvale Station is nothing like a vampire period piece, it is a unique independent film that shows Coogler’s understanding of a non-traditional form. The director could combine these indie roots with his growing propensity for strong genre stories (e.g. the superhero and sports genres), and Jordan’s growing star power, to make a movie that could be the pair’s most interesting yet.
