Michael Scott and Jim Halpert are two of The Office's most beloved characters characters. As soon as people meet them, it is clear that they have very differing personalities — Michael is loud and boisterous, while Jim is has a laid-back, go with the flow attitude. However, these men share some similar traits as well, which became more evident as the story progressed on the show.
From their skills in the workplace and their interests outside of the office to their overall vibes and their biggest desires in life, Michael and Jim are kindred spirits in some ways and polar opposites in others.
Alike: They Are Both Good At Their Dunder Mifflin Jobs
When these two actually sit down, get focused and do their jobs, they show real talent. After all, Michael worked his way up to a management position, and though his methods are always unconventional — and usually questionable — he is an effective leader. The numbers at the Scranton branch speak for themselves, and Michael deserves some of the credit.
Meanwhile, Jim can halfheartedly put in a few hours of work and still see fantastic results. After a while, he realized he wanted and needed to do more, and he also earned a management position at Dunder Mifflin.
Opposite: Jim Is More Interested In/Better At Sports
One of Jim’s main interests is sports. In high school, he played basketball and as an adult, he keeps up with his favorite teams in his free time. On more than one occasion, Jim's skills in this area have been put on display.
Michael, on the other hand, says that he is into b-ball, but he is not good at the game… at all.
Alike: They Are Both Kind, Genuine Human Beings
Despite any and all flaws, both Michael and Jim are good, kind and authentic human beings. They try not to intentionally hurt people (for the most part, in Michael’s case), they go out of their way to help people, and they are just genuinely caring and positive. That certainly can’t be said for everyone on this series — cough, Jan.
Opposite: Michael Can Be Very Inappropriate
Michael’s biggest flaw is probably his inappropriate behavior. While he is nice and caring, he acts and speaks without thinking. Therefore, he has hurt feelings, lost s and gotten into trouble, due to everything from racial insensitivity and sexual inappropriateness to just pure stupidity.
The fact that he did all of this as a boss and at work for so many years is sort of baffling, and Jim’s reactions are always spot-on with how viewers at home feel.
Alike: They Both Love Pam (& Deep Down, Their Other Coworkers... Mostly)
Another way these characters are alike is that they both love Pam, as well as their other coworkers (except for Toby, when it comes to Michael). Yes, the employees of Dunder Mifflin are like a family, even if they do not always get along.
Obviously, Jim fell in love with Pam, and Michael may have had a crush on her back in the day. But Michael really considers Pam to be one of his best friends, showing his for her time and again, like when he showed up to her art show.
Opposite: Jim Is Calmer
Jim has a calmer demeanor than Michael and is a relaxed, laid-back person. It takes quite a bit for him to get really upset or bent out of shape. Michael, though, reacts quickly and behaves impulsively. He can also be hyperactive to the point of being immature and annoying.
Alike: They Both Get Distracted At Work
While both of these characters are good at their jobs, they do get distracted at work. For Jim, this comes from boredom and laziness, from staring at and talking to Pam and of course, playing pranks on Dwight.
Michael is not really shown working that often and has been seen doing literally anything and everything else. He leaves in the middle of the day, he talks a lot, he gets very into office parties… The list goes on and on.
Opposite: Michael Feels The Need To Be Liked By Everyone
Unlike Jim, Michael feels the need to be liked by everyone. He is a generally happy-go-lucky and cheerful person, and he expects those around him to return that joy. If not, his feelings get hurt, and he will either go out of his way to change people’s viewpoint or enact some sort of revenge.
Jim hardly ever cares what anyone else thinks. Some exceptions include Pam (obviously), bosses (after realizing he needs to do more in life) and the few times he hurt feelings and apologized (like to Kelly after missing her birthday).
Alike: They Both Ended Up With Their Crushes
When The Office wrapped up, there were happy endings for these two fan-favorite characters: Michael is married to Holly, with four kids.
It was not always clear if these couples would wind up together and stay together, but it was definitely hoped for by fans and characters alike.
Opposite: Jim Is More Humble
Lastly, Jim is more humble than Michael, as so many episodes have featured Michael saying egotistical things. This is ironic, since he is usually bad at whatever he is bragging about, and Jim is probably skilled in the area — yet would never show that off. But it's their differences that make Michael and Jim so easy to love and root for.
