Based on an '80s TV series, the 2018 film Widows follows Veronica, Alice, Amanda, and Linda (Rodriguez), four widows who plot a daring heist in order to pay back the $2 million that Veronica's late husband Harry stole from a dangerous crime boss.
Critics lauded the film's action, messages, and casting, with Rodriguez's convincing performance as an entrepreneurial mother-of-two particularly singled out for praise.
WORST: She Dies Tomorrow (2020) - 5.2
The straight-to-streaming 2020 horror-thriller She Dies Tomorrow follows Amy (Kate Lyn Sheil), a woman who suddenly begins to believe, for no apparent reason, that she's going to die tomorrow. The fear begins to spread, as everyone who comes in with her leaves believing in their own impending doom.
Rodriguez appears as Sky, an "infected" woman who has accepted her own mortality. She Dies Tomorrow received positive reviews from critics, but audience reception for the film was significantly more mixed.
BEST: Furious 7 (2015) - 7.1
By far the most commercially and Furious 7 follows street racer Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his wife, Letty (Rodriguez), both of whom have retired from their life of crime after the events of the previous films.
However, after a vengeance-seeking assassin hunts them down, they have to reassemble their former team of autophiles in order to win the ensuing fight for survival. Furious 7 received mostly positive reviews from critics for its action, drama, and story.
WORST: The Breed (2006) - 5.1
The 2006 indie horror film The Breed follows a group of friends spending their week-long vacation on a charming remote island. Unbeknownst to them, they're not alone -- the island is also home to an abandoned pack of wild dogs specially-engineered to kill.
The Breed received negative reviews from critics for its story, characters, and directing, and currently has a 5.1 IMDb rating.
BEST: Fast & Furious 6 (2013) - 7.1
Released in 2013, Justin Lin's Owen Shaw, a criminal mastermind who has recruited an amnesiac Letty into his gang of mercs.
From there, the film jumps right into the crowd-pleasing high-octane action sequences that earned its predecessors such praise.
WORST: The Assignment (2016) - 4.6
A bizarre and arguably offensive action-thriller from director Walter Hill, 2016's The Assignment stars Rodriguez as Frank Kitchen, a skilled assassin who seeks revenge after unwillingly being given gender reassignment surgery by a criminally insane, vengeful plastic surgeon.
Upon its release, The Assignment was reviled by reviewers for its poor pacing, shoddy story, and B-movie performances. It was also met with several accusations of transphobia. For both these reasons, the film currently holds a dismal IMDb rating.
BEST: Alita: Battle Angel (2019) - 7.3
An adaptation of the classic manga series Battle Angel Alita, 2019's Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron. It follows Alita, a damaged cyborg missing her memories, who is discovered in a scrapyard and subsequently rescued by a caring scientist named Ido. As she learns to fight and survive in a post-apocalyptic world, she's forced to confront her mysterious past once and for all. Rodriguez appears as Alita's mentor, a fellow cyborg named Gelda.
Alita: Battle Angel received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics and audiences for its story, performances, and visual effects, although it was a heavy box-office-disappointment, making just $400 million off an estimated $200 million budget.
WORST: BloodRayne (2005) - 2.9
Based on the hit video game of the same name, the 2005 horror-fantasy BloodRayne stars Kristanna Loken as Rayne, a dhampir (cross between human and vampire) who seeks to destroy her father, the evil Vampire King. To do this, she allies herself with the Brimstone Society, a group of vampire hunters led by Sebastian, Vladimir, and Katarin (Rodriguez).
Bloodrayne was panned by critics for its plot, performances, visuals, and directing, and since its release, it has appeared on several worst-movie lists.
BEST: Avatar (2009) - 7.8
James Cameron's blockbuster sci-fi epic Pandora and prepare it for colonization. Rodriguez appears as pilot Trudy Chacón.
Avatar received near-universal critical acclaim, with praise directed at its story, characters, and visuals. It currently holds a 7.8 rating on IMDb.
WORST: InAPPropriate Comedy (2013) - 2.8
A raunchy, satirical comedy anthology billed as an "equal opportunity offender" and directed by the ShamWow guy, the 2013 film InAPPropriate Comedy starred Lindsay Lohan alongside Rob Schneider, Adrien Brody, and Rodriguez herself.
The film was universally panned by critics, many of whom called it unfunny and even boring at points. It currently has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 1/100 on MetaCritic, making its dreadful 2.8 IMDb rating seem almost inflated in comparison.
