Sonic’s 30th anniversary saw a myriad of new content, including a Sonic Colors remaster and a retro collection of Sonic games. But Minecraft's Sonic the Hedgehog DLC was undoubtedly the most unexpected release, which saw the addition of several beloved characters from Sega’s franchise enter the game's iconic block form. From recreations of classic levels to new activities to enjoy with friends, Minecraft’s Sonic The Hedgehog DLC has a lot to offer.

The feature that players will likely take advantage of the most is the addition of Sonic player models. Most of the biggest stars from the franchise make an appearance, including Sonic himself, Knuckles, Miles “Tails” Prower, Amy, and more. They will be available to use in the activities offered in the DLC or in normal gameplay. Core Sonic gameplay is given a Minecraft’s spin, with nostalgic activities like speeding through the Green Hill Zone and rescuing Chao throughout the various levels.

In addition to the player models, the Sonic the Hedgehog DLC also features some of the franchise’s most famous areas. The Green Hill Zone, Chemical Plant Zone, and Sky Sanctuary are confirmed thus far, plus a more limited version of the Sonic Chao Garden. Each of these has been redesigned with Minecraft’s graphics but with wildly different gameplay from Minecraft's usual. Players who purchase the DLC will be able to race through the levels and even take on the infamous Dr. Eggman, as well as explore some unrevealed secrets only teased by Sega and Mojang.

One of Minecraft’s best-loved features is its multiplayer, which is featured in the Sonic DLC as well. Players can compete with one another in various challenges, gaining momentum throughout the levels to finish faster and gain more points. Player scores are determined by the speed at which players complete the races, the number of rings collected, and the damage done to bosses. Minecraft players are also able to receive special content in a special two-week event, with players being urged to log on this weekend to receive additional prizes.

Minecraft has taken advantage of various licensing opportunities to give fans more content through various crossover DLCs, and Sonic’s recent release only speaks to the success of this formula. The game continues to grow with each update and additional DLC, such as Part One of the Caves and Cliffs Minecraft update which added a significant amount of new content to the game. The Sonic the Hedgehog DLC is available now for purchase on the Minecraft Marketplace.
