The Dead Reckoning Part Two cast includes the return of Ethan's regular team of operatives played by Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Rebecca Ferguson alongside franchise newcomers Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, and Pom Klementieff.
During an interview with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two release date next summer, McQuarrie revealed that the movie doesn't even have an ending yet despite being in production since March. He went on to add that he and Cruise know the direction they want the story to take, but not all the finer details involved. Read what McQuarrie said below:
I don't know what the ending of Part Two is, so I couldn't tell you. I'm not being evasive. I could tell you that I know what the end of Part Two is, but I can't guarantee that that will be the ending when we get there. Tom and I never obsess about executing the plan. We always have a direction, we always have a place we’re going. In our trying to describe the process, in retrospect, it sounds as though what we do is just flying by the seat of our pants and making it up as we go along. That's not an accurate description. You are definitely flying in a direction, you're definitely prepared. You couldn't be that cavalier without somebody getting seriously physically hurt. These things are planned within an inch of their life. Along the way, we see a shiny object and go for it
Is Dead Reckoning Part Two Tom Cruise's Last Mission: Impossible Movie?
The fact that Dead Reckoning Part Two's ending is still being decided can likely be attributed to uncertainty over whether Cruise will come back for more. Early last year, a report indicated that Mission Impossible 7 and 8 were being planned as Cruise's sendoff from the franchise, though McQuarrie has made multiple comments walking that back. Just recently, he said that Dead Reckoning Part Two isn't the end of the series and they already have ideas for Mission: Impossible 9.
However, it's still unclear if Cruise will return beyond Dead Reckoning Part Two. If it's his last Mission: Impossible movie, the ending will likely provide an emotional sendoff for the character, possibly by giving him a heroic death à la Daniel Craig's James Bond. But if Cruise wants to continue, the ending will likely be open-ended enough to allow for more adventures in the future. Right now, the status of the franchise after Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two is unclear, but perhaps more will become apparent after Part One's premiere.
