Tom Cruise's latest action extravaganza Mission: Impossible series, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and the IMF team find themselves in a race against time after a mission gone wrong. Henry Cavill, Vanessa Kirby and Angela Bassett returning franchise cast Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Alec Baldwin.

As has become the norm for the Mission: Impossible films, Fallout contains loads of Tom Cruise's signature death-defying stunts. This time around, performs a HALO jump from a plane, plummeting to earth at 200 mph with a cameraman literally feet away. The question is, will all these stunts translate into a bigger box office haul?

Cruise and Paramount Pictures hope the actor's latest feats of daring will compel audiences to flock to Mission: Impossible - Fallout when it hits theaters later this month. Thus far, tracking data suggests fans are indeed primed to make the latest mission a hit, at least by the standards of the series. As reported by Variety, Fallout is currently tracking to make between $48 million and $65 million in its opening weekend. If it hits the high number, it will come in with the biggest opening ever for the series.

The current record-holder for biggest Mission: Impossible opening weekend is 2000's John Woo-directed Mission: Impossible II, which bowed with $57.8 million in a May release. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol officially ranks last with a $12 million bow in December 2011, though, in that case, the film was rolled out to just 425 IMAX screens its opening weekend before going nationwide the following week.

Ultimately, Ghost Protocol would come in with the biggest overall numbers ever for the series, grossing $694 million worldwide. Rogue Nation would also go on to top the $600 million mark worldwide with $682 million in receipts. Cruise and company have a decent chance see Mission: Impossible - Fallout become the top grossing film in the series, as it faces little new competition during its release week. The only other big movie coming out that weekend is Teen Titans GO! To the Movies, which is currently tracking to finish well behind Fallout with a high estimate of $19 million for the weekend.
