Thor's iconic weapon Mjolnir will return to the MCU in Thor: Love and Thunder, and it could possibly provide answers to some of the mysteries of the multiverse. Phase 4 of the MCU has been heavily concentrated on the multiverse so far, but the Thor sequel wasn't known to be a part of that focus. Now, given its reintroduction of the titular Avenger's magical hammer, Thor Love and Thunder's inclusion in this chapter of the franchise seems potentially more important than anyone initially thought.
In the MCU, Mjolnir has been shown to possess many powerful properties. The most unique of these shown to date is the enchantment that Odin bestowed onto it in the first Thor movie, allowing for only those deemed worthy to wield Mjolnir and gain the powers of the thunder god. This spell depicted in the MCU is shared with the Marvel Comics version of Mjolnir, and there are a couple of new properties possessed by Mjolnir in the current run of the comic book title Avengers Forever that could similarly carry over into the movies. And one of these abilities, in particular, would easily and heavily tie Thor: Love and Thunder to the multiverse.
In Avengers Forever #4, Mjolnir is shown to have the ability to communicate with other versions of the hammer throughout the multiverse. With a link established, the Granddaughters of King Thor travel through the multiverse with Mjolnir coming and guiding them to arrive on Earth-818, the world of the other version of the weapon. The reason Mjolnir leads the Granddaughters to Earth-818 is that it's a world in need of aid. The MCU's reconstructed Mjolnir, which will be in the hands of Jane Foster's Mighty Thor in Thor: Love and Thunder, could develop this same property as a direct result of the interactions of the multiverse that the heroes have faced thus far in the franchise. And if Mjolnir shows the potency of this ability as possessed by its comic book counterparts, the hammer could be the solution to navigating the multiverse.
Navigating the problems of the MCU's multiverse.
It is no coincidence that Marvel Studios planned for Thor: Love and Thunder to release in the middle of the MCU's multiverse arc. With each installment of Phase 4 of the MCU, there have been further developments of the multiverse plotline, and Thor's fourth solo outing will most definitely have something to add to this thread. Now it seems likely that the return of the once-destroyed Mjolnir to the MCU will be the tool through which the movie will find its connections to the rest of the current stage of the franchise.
