Dwayne Johnson has accomplished a rare box office feat. The star is best known as an actor in the modern era, but he got his start as a wrestler with the WWE, performing under the pseudonym The Rock. He began to transition into being a movie star with early roles in such films as 2001's The Mummy Returns, where he played a villain, a role that he reprised as the lead of the 2002 spinoff The Scorpion King.
Since then, the amount of Dwayne Johnson movies has grown to an astronomical number. Some of his major works include many of the later entries in the Fast & Furious franchise, including the spinoff Hobbs & Shaw, the DC superhero movie Black Adam, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and its sequel The Next Level, the Netflix smash hit Red Notice, and the Disney theme park attraction adaptation Jungle Cruise. All together, his movies have grossed more than $14 billion worldwide.
Dwayne Johnson Is Conquering The Top 5
Two Of His Movies Have Charted Over Thanksgiving
With the Moana 2 release, Dwayne Johnson has landed two movies in the domestic box office Top 5 at the same time. The new movie, which is a sequel to the 2016 Disney animated hit, opened the day before U.S. Thanksgiving. It came just one and a half weeks after the premiere of the holiday action-comedy Red One, in which Johnson played North Pole security chief Callum Drift, who must work with hacker Jack O'Malley (Chris Evans) to save Christmas after Santa Claus (J. K. Simmons) is kidnapped.
Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Moana 2 is projected to claim the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office during its debut weekend with a three-day gross of $140 million and a five-day gross between $215 and $220 million. That three-day total provides Johnson with his second-best opening weekend ever, behind Furious 7's $147.1 million debut.
Additionally, Red One is sliding onto the chart at No. 4 with a projected three-day total of $13.2 million, representing a 0% drop from the previous weekend, and a five-day gross of $19 million, affording him the rare opportunity of having two movies in the Top 5 simultaneously.
What This Means For Dwayne Johnson
The Star's Box Office Prospects Are Strong
Although the Red One release has been something of a disappointment in the face of its huge reported budget of $250 million, Dwayne Johnson accomplishing this box office feat with the smash hit Moana 2 shows that his movies are still viable performers. In recent years, some of his movies have struggled to earn back their budgets, including Black Adam and Jungle Cruise, but this chart performance could be the beginning of a commercial renaissance for the star, especially considering his projects, which include the live-action Moana and Fast X: Part 2.
