Gundam GQuuuuuuX will stream on Amazon Prime worldwide, starting with a premiere on the streaming service in Japan on April 9th. The newest entry in the most famous mech franchise is being cowritten by acclaimed Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno. Just recently, a re-edited version of the anime's first four episodes received a theatrical release, titled Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-.

While many entries in the Gundam franchise are epic space operas about war, GQuuuuuuX starts off in a far more humble place. The series follows a young woman going by the nickname Machu who, after gaining access to a Gundam known as GQuuuuuuX, uses the mech to enter a battle sport called Clan Battle. GQuuuuuuX's origins, alongside ongoing political tensions playing out in the background, tease that fans have yet to see the full scope of the latest Gundam anime.

The Franchise May Have A Solid Hit On Its Hands

Riding high off the success of Gundam: The Witch From Mercury and Gundam SEED Freedom, the Gundam franchise has had its own little renaissance in the past few years. Even taking that into , GQuuuuuuX has the potential to be the series' biggest hit in years. With a fresh animation style and the star power of Hideaki Anno, GQuuuuuuX has all the makings of a generation-defining hit. ​​​​​Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- has already received rave reviews and has been a commercial success in Japan, showing that faith in Anno's direction is clearly well-placed.

In addition to Hideaki Anno's writing, GQuuuuuuX is also being written by fellow Evangelion writer Yoji Enokido and directed by Evangelion assistant director Kazuya Tsurumaki.

The series' success is further cemented by having GQuuuuuuX stream on Amazon Prime globally. Though The Witch From Mercury's popularity was enough to rival One Piece's, it was only available to stream on Crunchyroll in the United States, meaning it might have had a tougher time breaking through to more casual anime fans. Streaming on Prime is a huge win for GQuuuuuuX, ensuring a fairly wide audience has access to the series.

GQuuuuuuX Might Be The Franchise's Biggest Experiment In Decades

Though fans have only really gotten hints of the larger plotlines that GQuuuuuuX will tackle, it's already clear that the new anime is going for something original. Mobile Fighter G Gundam explored a similar premise of using the titular mechs for some sort of sport of competition, but that was nearly three decades ago, so GQuuuuuuX will still feel fresh.

In addition to that, Hideaki Anno's writing style has a deep psychological edge that led to Neon Genesis Evangelion's unprecedented success. All of that combines to mean that GQuuuuuuX has a lot going for it right out of the gate. Fans have very good reason to look forward to Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX when it streams on Amazon Prime later in 2025.
