At the start of Modern Family, Haley Dunphy was seen as one of the more fashionable characters. She was young, popular, and always had the coolest sense of style. As the series went on, Haley played around with her hair and makeup as her style changed. Likewise, her personality evolved over time.
Haley has always been a little ditzy but she showed glimmers of maturity as she transformed. By season 11, she was no longer that high school girl who wore Ugg boots with denim skirts. She was now a married mother of two with a successful career and eye for cutting fashion.
Season 1: Young & Colorful
In the first season of Modern Family, Haley was in high school and was in an on-and-off relationship with a senior, Dylan. She was focused on getting her driver's license and not letting her younger, smarter sister, Alex, embarrass her. Haley's hair was much longer in season 1 and her style reflected that 2009 era.
Season 2: Life With A Modern Family
In the second season of Modern Family, viewers saw Haley become more connected to her family (whether she intended it to be that way or not). This season shared plenty of Haley's ups and downs with Alex (from borrowing clothes to trying to make Alex "cool") and she also spent more time with Claire and got to know Manny on a deeper level.
As always, Haley still had the attitude of a spunky teenager who was embarrassed by her family but she was learning to love them despite the embarrassment.
Season 3: Looking Forward Toward The Future
Season 3 was a time of growth for Haley. She turned down Dylan's proposal in "Dude Ranch" and she started looking into colleges. The fact that Haley was thinking about her future was huge. Applying to colleges was intimidating for her because she wasn't always the sharpest tool in the shed. While all her friends were getting into colleges, she was hoping for the best and leaning on a future with Dylan as a backup plan.
Style-wise, Haley focused on accessories and chic layers. Her style became cohesive in this season.
Season 4: Collge (And Home) Bound
In the fourth season, Haley started life as a college student. She was nervous but excited to live on her own. For the show's sake, Haley touched base with the family through FaceTime, so she was still very much involved in the family dynamic.
But as quickly as Haley entered college, she left just as fast. After a drunken night at a house party, she was arrested for assaulting a police officer and subsequently kicked out of school. She spent the rest of the season getting her act together and trying to figure out her ion in life.
Season 5: Finding Her ion
In the fifth season, Haley was taking classes at the local community college and found her ion through fashion and photography. She even had a showcase that displayed some of her work. It was also in this season where Haley let her guard down in relationships. She was playing the field but when she met Andy, she realized she was being treated poorly in all of her relationships. By the season finale, Haley realized she had feelings for Andy and became closer to him as a friend.
Season 6: Working Gal
Season 6 was one of Haley's best. She worked hard with Andy to be prepared for a fashion interview, and she ended up landing the job. Even without a college degree, Haley's love for fashion proved itself with her new career path. Haley also turned 21 in the sixth season and she and her mom were closer than ever. Claire finally felt like Haley had a vision for her life and could loosen her grip on her firstborn.
At the end of the season, Haley realized that her friendship with Andy grew into something more and that she loved him. There was only one problem — he proposed to Beth.
Season 7: Breakups, Affairs, And Opposing Forces
Big changes happened for Haley in the seventh season. Alex went away to college and she got back together with Dylan when Andy proposed to Beth. Internally, Haley missed her opposing force of a sister and didn't realize it. Likewise, she finally acknowledged that she couldn't pretend like she didn't have feelings for Andy when she did. She dumped Dylan and entered a secret relationship with Andy until he could break up with Beth.
While her career and style choices were on her point, Haley's personal life was in shambles. She and Andy decided to call it quits at the end of the season when he got a job opportunity in Utah.
Season 8: Short Hair & An Older Relationship
By the eighth season, Haley had finally found herself. She started a promotion business, became friendlier with Alex, and started dating an older man named Rainer. Rainer was a weatherman with a daughter who wasn't much younger than Haley.
Dating an older man made Haley more mature in a lot of ways. She was communicating better with her family and genuinely liked working. As per usual, she and Rainer fell apart but it was a good learning experience for the eldest Dunphy kid.
Season 9: Nerp And Arvin
When Haley's job with Gavin Sinclair came to an end, she started working at the country club with Luke. This was a special season for the Dunphy kids because it seemed like they all got along. Haley and Luke were working together, and Alex helped prep Haley for her interview with Nerp.
Nerp was a large tech company that Haley desperately wanted to land a job with, which she ended up getting. But that's not all Haley got, as she also started dating one of Alex's professors, Arvin. Arvin was the male version of Alex and Haley's complete opposite. And yet, they worked well together.
Season 10: An Old Flame And Motherhood
When Arvin was away for business, Haley ran into Dylan and picked up where they left off. Haley felt awful that she cheated on Arvin but she was torn. She loved Dylan and Arvin at the same time. She eventually chose Dylan, which was an easy choice after she found out she was pregnant.
Pregnancy was a shock for Haley, especially when things were going so well at Nerp and she loved her job. Haley eventually married Dylan, had her twins, and kept her job at Nerp. She had it all.
