The hit sitcom Modern Family focused on one extended family and all the wacky of it. The Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan was what made the show so memorable. They are funny and charming people who sometimes struggle to get along with one another but are always loving nonetheless.

From the fun-loving yet dim-witted Luke to the grounded yet overly critical Mitchell, the characters in Modern Family pull viewers in with both their most lovable traits and their incredibly annoying ticks. Love them or hate them, it's impossible to ignore the incredible plethora of characters that made audiences laugh out loud for over a decade!

Luke - Best: Fun-Loving; Worst: Dim-Witted

Luke Dunphy starts out as one of the youngest of the extended family and he certainly has that child-like quality to him. Luke was never overly preoccupied with how he appeared to others and his main concern was always having as much fun as possible. It made the adorable little boy endearing.

As a kid, it was clear Luke was not the brightest member of the family and that didn't really change much as he got older. His awkward teen years took away his cuteness and as a result, he was simply another dim-witted high school boy without a thought in his head. Thankfully, things seemed to turn around by the end of the show.

Manny - Best: Self-Confidence; Worst: Creepiness

Like his best buddy Luke, Manny was introduced as the cute young kid at the beginning of the series. However, he was very different from Luke and most other kids his age. He had a cultured taste in art, movies, and literature as well as a taste for the finer things in life. This sometimes made him an outcast among his peers, but Manny was always confident to be himself which is something to ire.

Manny also had an interest in women even from a young age and that got creepier as time went on. The fact that he would hit on his cousin Haley is weird enough, but he would later develop these obsessions with girls that were far less charming than he thought.

Alex - Best: Intelligence; Worst: Belittling

Though she is one of the youngest of the family, Alex continuously proves herself to be the smartest among them. While that is not always so impressive given how absent-minded and ignorant her family can be, there is no denying Alex is a straight-up genius.

While that intelligence is impressive on its own, it also seems to be the cause for her worst trait as well. Perhaps annoyed that her intelligence doesn't get noticed as often as she likes, Alex can be very belittling and demeaning to others, acting like she is superior to everyone around her, especially her family.

Haley - Best: Sociable; Worst: Self-Centered

Haley Modern Family

As the oldest child of the family, Haley was a lot for the other youngsters to live up to. She was the most popular kid in school and always had a ton of friends. While that itself is not necessarily a good trait, it speaks to the fact that Haley is a very sociable person and can really make friends wherever she goes.

Of course, all that popularity also goes to Haley's head a little bit and she tended to be quite self-centered at times. Her needs always came before everyone else's and she could often be found staring at herself in the mirror rather than interacting with her family.

Mitch - Best: Grounded; Worst: Overly Critical

With some of the more outlandish of the family, it is always helpful to have someone who can keep the rest grounded. While he had his own occasional bouts of madness, Mitchell could usually be counted on to be that person. He was a practical person who didn't get carried away with his emotions as often as the others.

Sometimes that more grounded approach would be just what was needed, but other times Mitch could be a real buzz-kill. He could be critical of people to the point where it was in no way constructive and he would often come off as meanspirited.

Cam - Best: Enthusiastic; Worst: Intrusive

Cam certainly has one of the biggest personalities of all the characters on the show which made him one of the most lovable of the family. A big part of that was due to the fact that he would approach almost any situation with such enthusiasm that it became contagious.

That enthusiasm could also lead him to get carried away with things and look for that next great adventure in some inappropriate places. Cam would force himself into other people's lives adding even more drama to already unstable situations.

Jay - Best: Hard-Working; Worst: Close-Minded

Jay Pritchett (Modern Family) Cropped

As the patriarch of the family, Jay gives the others a lot to look up to. Not only is he a provider for the whole family, constantly taking them on lavish vacations, out to fancier dinners, and hosting get-togethers, but he has also built a very successful business from scratch. He brings that hard-working attitude to every aspect of his life.

As the oldest member of the family, it is clear that Jay sees the world differently than the others. He likes to think that he has an old-fashioned view of the world, but it is actually quite close-minded. He is stubborn about accepting things and can even be unive of his own family if their lifestyles conflict with his outdated opinions.

Gloria - Best: Independent; Worst: Anger Issues

Given the age difference between Jay and Gloria, there are some who look at Gloria as the beautiful trophy wife to the rich old man. However, Gloria is far more complex and much stronger than that opinion suggests. She came from poverty and managed to raise Manny as a single mother succeeding on her own.

Given her harsh life before meeting Jay, it is clear that Gloria had to build up a certain toughness. However, sometimes that toughness can seem quite scary as her anger boils over quite easily. As loving as she is to her family, she can really go overboard in some cases when she feels she has been wronged.

Claire - Best: Take-Charge Attitude; Worst: Bossy

Throughout the series, Claire has spearheaded many endeavors, taken over her father's company, and kept her family in check. She is able to accomplish this because she knows how to take charge of situations. Whenever Claire sees a problem, she is on it and works hard to find a solution. She never quits once she puts her mind to something.

When Claire does take charge of a situation, she expects everyone to do things her way. As a collaborator, Claire could use some work as she see likes to be the one telling people what to do and she can be somewhat mean in that boss role.

Phil - Best: Creative; Worst: Immature

phil and his banjo - modern family

Many fans consider Phil to be the best character on the show and it's not hard to see why. He is hilarious and charming in a goofy way as he embraces all of his childlike dreams and his active imagination. While this influences a lot of his antics, it also drives him creatively in his work and in being a great family man.

As fun as it is for the audience to see Phil act like this adult child, it would be very frustrating to have him as a husband or father. His refusal to think about the consequences and his impulsive nature means his family often has to clean up after his mistakes.
