Jesse Tyler Ferguson, star of ABC's hit sitcom Modern Family, recently revealed to Andy Cohen that there were initial talks for a Mitch and Cam spin-off series after the finale. Creators Christopher Lloyd and Stephen Levitan came up with the idea for Modern Family after telling stories of their own families to each other, and the series premiered on the network in September 2009. After a successful eleven-season run, the show was eventually brought to an end in April 2020 with the series finale.

Modern Family follows three different families, all of which are related through the patriarch, Jay Pritchett, and sees them navigate the trials and tribulations of not only their own personal lives but also life with such a complicated family. Along with Ferguson, the star-studded cast included Ed O'Neill, Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Eric Stonestreet, Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould, and Rico Rodriguez. Out of all the characters, Mitch Prichett and Cam Tucker were always extremely popular among audiences, along with their adopted daughter, Lily.

While speaking with host Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, Ferguson was given a rapid-fire round, answering questions about the series and different elements from behind the scenes. As the final question, Cohen pointed out that the finale left the opportunity of a spin-off open for the characters as they began their new life in Missouri and asked if there had been any discussions of a new series. The actor then revealed that ABC considered a Mitch and Cam spin-off, however, the network ultimately decided against it. Read Ferguson's comments below:

There were discussions and I think the network decided against it, that's the first time I've ever said that!  Yeah, I think they were just wondering if this was the right family to still tell that story. I think that, we'd been on for eleven years, I think they're ready to move in a different direction.

Despite his statement, this is not the first time Ferguson has commented on the potential spin-off. However, when he last spoke about it in 2021, it seemed like talks with ABC were still ongoing. Now, Ferguson seems more certain that there won't be a Mitch and Cam Modern Family spin-off show.

For right now, it seems like the Modern Family universe is complete. However, due to the show's popularity, it's possible that ABC could revisit the series with a reboot or a spin-off in the future, so audiences shouldn't lose hope yet. Either way, they are always able to relive the joy of the series as Modern Family is currently available to stream on Disney+.
