Modern Family ran until season 11, ending its impressive stint on ABC in 2020. The hit comedy series landed 22 Emmy awards from 75 nominations, and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series (Musical or Comedy) in 2011. Early Modern Family seasons were praised by critics, though later seasons received more mixed reviews. However, the hit show maintains a loyal fanbase even two years after its finale.

The series creators, Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, crafted a show that hilariously explored various types of American families in modern society: blended, nuclear, and same-sex. Using a signature mockumentary style made popular by shows like The Office and Parks and Recreation, the series starred Ed O'Neill and Sofia Vergara as patriarch Jay and his wife Gloria, and Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell as Claire and Phil. Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet featured as Mitchell and Cameron, fathers to their young adopted daughter, Lily.

In a recent ET interview, Ferguson revealed that a script for a spinoff to the hit series does indeed exist. According to the actor, the Modern Family spinoff script has been written, but does not have a home as of yet. At this point, it remains undeveloped. See his comments below:

"The script's out there and it's very good. So, you know, who knows? If someone wants to produce it, maybe."

While Ferguson has already discussed the possibility of a Modern Family spinoff, this is the first time the project has gone from just theoretical to something more concrete. Not only has the spinoff been discussed, it is now actually written and waiting to be picked up. Due to Modern Family's immense success, the desire for a spinoff is not at all surprising. Returning to the beloved core Modern Family characters would be a sure-fire way to attract viewers to a new series, especially given that it served as a platform to push many of its cast into stardom, including Burrell and Sarah Hyland, who played Haley Dunphy.

Many of the original Modern Family actors have moved on with their careers. O'Neill is working on a new drama series, while Ferguson himself is starring in the acclaimed Broadway revival of Take Me Out, for which he just won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. If the Modern Family spinoff does get the greenlight, it may be difficult to get certain cast  to return or their schedules to line up, possibly pushing production on a continuation to further down the road. In the mean time, at least Ferguson's script update is very promising, and perhaps the Dunphys and Pritchetts will be back on screens soon.
