In this summer’s MODOK will assume his ultimate form, getting a god-tier upgrade that makes him more than a match for the God of Thunder. MODOK is one of Marvel’s most unique villains; created by AIM as the ultimate killing machine, he is now out for revenge against those who have used him as a pawn–a quest that leads him to take control of the entire Ten Realma, except for Asgard. Now, it falls on Thor to save the universe from MODOK’s ultimate form: MYTHOS.
As reported by AIPT, this July’s Thor Annual #1, written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Ibraim Roberson with a cover by Adam Kubert, will see MODOK (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) “seize control of all the Ten Realms except Asgard,” which draws the attention of Thor. However, the new, cosmic-powered MODOK proves to be more than Thor can handle–forcing the Odinson to reach out to his friends and allies. Together, they must topple MODOK and restore order to the Ten Realms. AIPT also reported that this annual will harken back to the “grand tradition of Marvel Comics’ action-packed summer annuals,” and will be double-sized. The annual will also include a preview for the next great era of Thor. Co-writer Lanzing was quoted as being “wildly honored” to be a part of Thor’s “glorious legacy.” Lanzing felt annuals were a great way to dig into a character, and he and his collaborators plan on putting Thor through his paces.
Since his first appearance in 1967’s Tales of Suspense #94, MODOK has ranked as one of Marvel’s strangest–but deadliest, villains. Created by AIM (Advanced Idea Mechanics) to be the ultimate computer, he instead killed his creators and took control of the organization. MODOK has since gone on to menace Captain America and many other heroes of the Marvel Universe, and has been adapted into several other media, most recently in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. MODOK’s unique appearance and gimmick have endured him to generations of comic fans–and now he is getting a god-level upgrade.
A God-Level MODOK Is Truly Scary
Thanks to his superior intellect and mental powers, MODOK is a formidable foe on his own, but with god-level powers he becomes a living nightmare. MODOK is one of the smartest characters in the Marvel Universe, and with the power of the Ten Realms behind him, there might be nothing that can stop him. A god-level MODOK proves too much for even Thor, who must fall back and rally help from Earth. Yet how did MODOK gain control of the Ten Realms in the first place? Lanzing hinted MODOK’s power grab ties into the annual’s larger themes of self-doubt and proving oneself worthy. Lanzing said that Thor, as the new All-Father, has been plagued by doubt since assuming the throne, and this annual will clear that up once and for all.
This year’s Thor Annual marks the return of giant-sized annuals, which were the norm for many years. Marvel is bringing the tradition back in a major way, by putting Thor in the battle of his life against a god-level MODOK, who has renamed himself MYTHOS.
