A cameo appearance in the newly released Monarch: Legacy of Monsters trailer could mean big things for the new show and the future of Godzilla and the MonsterVerse. The Apple TV+ show, set to be released on November 17th, 2023, plans to explore the decades of mysteries from the mysterious Monarch organization and their connection to monsters that stretches back to World War II. The first live-action addition television show in the MonsterVerse, Legacy of Monsters hopes to fill in many of the holes of the history and lore of the universe that was first introduced in 2014's Godzilla.
The Legacy of Monsters trailer reveals many connections to the movies that have come out since that time and will attempt to connect the dots between Monarch: Legacy of Monsters's story and previous entries. Several different periods throughout history will be explored from Lee Shaw's perspective. The stories that will permeate Legacy of Monsters will have a lasting impact not only on the present timeline but also on how the monsters are pursued and handled in the future.
Why Bill Randa Is In Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters
The Monarch trailer sees Bill Randa (John Goodman) narrating a video left behind after his death during Kong: Skull Island. After leading the Monarch expedition in that film, Randa recognizes the mistakes Monarch made in trying to discover and kill the various monsters. This new confession before his death seems to be the catalyst that sets up the mystery that will be explored. Somehow, a group of people after 2014's Godzilla discovered this message and tried to unravel the secrets covered up by Monarch. The trailer shows Randa's taped confession, a bag with his name on it, and various papers from his time with Monarch.
One of the characters in the film is Cate Randa, played by Anna Sawai. She is somehow related to Bill Randa and discovers her family's secrets while recovering from the events of Godzilla's attack in 2014. Considering Bill Randa's long association with Monarch before his death, it appears Cate will uncover many of the organization's mistakes and will attempt to get to the bottom of those so the world can better understand Monarch's role in unleashing monsters on the world. Exposing those secrets could take Cate and the other characters of Legacy of Monsters to any number of places around the world, including the legendary Skull Island.
Will Skull Island Appear in Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters?
Ever since 2021's Godzilla vs. Kong extracted King Kong from Skull Island, a lingering question in the MonsterVerse is when there would be a return. With Bill Randa's appearance in this new show, the first time any of the Skull Island characters have reprised their role, this location will likely be featured, even if it is only in the past. The more important question is whether Lee Shaw, (Kurt Russell, and his son, Wyatt Russell, playing the same character 50 years apart) or any other characters will visit the ancient island in the more modern timeline following Godzilla's destruction of San Francisco.
Bill Randa originally led an expedition to Skull Island not only to study and hunt King Kong but also to uncover the ancient mysteries buried on the island. If Cate Randa's mission is to expose Monarch and the secrets they have kept from the world for decades, it makes sense that a return to Skull Island would be inevitable in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. King Kong is not the only monster that resides on that island, as was shown in Kong: Skull Island. The Skullcrawlers were formidable creatures in that film, not to mention the other unused monsters in Kong's homeland.
