A first look image of Monarch season 1 ended with Cate (Anna Sawai), May (Kiersey Clemons), and Keiko (Mari Yamamoto) escaping the pocket of Hollow Earth, with Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) sacrificing himself to ensure their survival. However, upon getting back, they wind up on Skull Island two years later, where Kentaro (Ren Watabe) is working with Apex Cybernetics. Kong is teased at the end, emphasizing the focus of the forthcoming season.

Now, Apple TV+ has released the first image of production on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 as the show begins filming. The new image shows the Operation Hourglass vehicle Cate, May, and Keiko returned in, alongside two vehicles with red Apex logos sitting beside it. The background jungle illustrates how the season will begin on Skull Island, which could be the key locale of the whole season. Check out the new image below:

Kong's Monsterverse return can finally help make up for the true sequel to 2017's Kong: Skull Island that never ended up happening.

It's still unclear what Apex is doing on Skull Island, but it appears their research could tie into how they end up creating Mechagodzilla in the future. Given Godzilla's feud with Kongs prior to the movies, it makes sense for them to study him in hopes of building something that can defeat him and control all Titans. As for how the cast of Monarch ties in, the show will need to justify what their involvement is, especially given May's own shaky history with the company.

Although there's no word yet on what Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will entail, the image hints at Apex's backstory being the core focus of the season. This could mean the arrival of other robotic Titans, either preexisting, like Mechani-Kong, or wholly original to the Monsterverse. Either way, the research they conduct in season 2 and the interactions the main cast has with them is bound to set the stage for their inevitable later role in the franchise.
