Warning: Spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 6

Summary

  • Godzilla was found in Algeria in 2015, emerging from the ground after being drawn out by a device that simulated gamma radiation signals.
  • Prior to Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla was active and on patrol in the oceans, visiting locations such as California, Antarctica, and Skull Island.
  • Godzilla's departure from Algeria sets up the possibility of another Titan battle and hints at a significant destination he is heading towards.

Nine years after the Titan battle that launched the Monsterverse, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters revealed where Godzilla surfaced next. Following his hard-fought victory over the two MUTOs that terrorized the Earth in 2014, Godzilla swam into the bay of San Francisco and wasn't seen again for another five years. Godzilla seemingly kept a low-profile once the MUTOs were beaten, and seemingly saw no need to return until Ghidorah awoke at the beginning of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Various Monsterverse installments and tie-in material chronicling other periods have created an extensive timeline for Godzilla's activities. Over the centuries, he's cropped up in multiple places, including the Philippines, Hong Kong, Boston, and more. But due to large time skips between Godzilla's Monsterverse movies, there's quite a lot of ambiguity surrounding his actions. Prior to the release of King of the Monsters, the Monsterverse had fun teasing Godzilla's movements by putting up a Monarch website that tracked Godzilla's location in the months that preceded his fight with Ghidorah. As for what he was doing in the immediate aftermath of the battle, and where he emerged from the oceans next, that has long been unclear.

Godzilla Was Found In Algeria In 2015

Godzilla in Algerian Desert in Monarch Legacy of Monsters

Thanks to a big reveal in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 6, it's now confirmed that Godzilla was in Algeria in 2015, one year after the MUTO fight. To the surprise of the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters characters, Godzilla rose up out of the Algerian Desert after they finally caught up to Hiroshi Randa. Randa was shown to be in the possession of a device invented in the 1950s that allows people to "simulate" gamma radiation signals. From the looks of things, Randa activated the device in the Algerian Desert, which is what drew Godzilla out of hibernation from the ground below.

It's possible that Godzilla has been sleeping there since 2014. Godzilla rested throughout the day in San Francisco after he killed the female MUTO with the Kiss of Death, but that may not have been enough for a full recovery. That could have sent him to a new place to hole up for a while. Based on the timeline of the series, whatever rest Godzilla enjoyed underneath the Algerian Desert lasted no longer than one full year. Now that he's awake again, he's back on the move. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 6's ending saw Godzilla walk off into the distance, out of the sight of the show's human characters.

Everything Else Known About What Godzilla Was Doing Before King Of The Monsters

Castle Bravo in Godzilla King of the Monsters

At the start of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla was fully awake and on patrol in the oceans. According to the Godzilla tracker on the now-defunct Monarch website, Godzilla was extremely busy. At different points, he circled back to California, coming up close to the coast of San Diego. He also swam by Antarctica, possibly to make sure King Ghidorah's resting place remained undisturbed. Additionally, he made a by Skull Island, the home of his ancestral rival, Kong. It could be that he wanted to see if Kong was staying within his own territory, but it's hard to say for certain. Surveying other Titan locations and ensuring that none of the Monsterverse Titans were causing trouble or threatening his dominance may have been the point of his voyage around the globe.

Godzilla's Departure From Algeria Sets Up Another Titan Battle

Lee Shaw holds up a pair of binoculars in Monarch Legacy of Monsters

Theoretically, getting up and heading off in the desert in Algeria may have been the starting point for his patrol of the oceans. However, the sizable gap between Godzilla and King of the Monsters signifies that the Monsterverse has room for more reveals about Godzilla's unseen activities before he goes on his long tour of the world's oceans. However, it's important to note that King of the Monsters noted that Godzilla and the Titans disappeared after San Francisco. For that reason, there's a limit to how much he can be seen publicly without the show risking any significant continuity errors. But, that doesn't rule out a Godzilla fight happening in the series.

That said, Godzilla getting into a fight of some kind after leaving Algeria does look likely. Shaw seems to believe that Godzilla's next destination is crucial to their own journey, thus setting him up to appear at least one more time in the 2015 storyline. Where Godzilla is going hasn't been specified, but if Shaw's comments in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 6 are any indication, Godzilla isn't just patrolling or meandering around aimlessly. He says that it's important that they follow Godzilla and find out where he's going. Judging by this development, Godzilla does indeed have another big stop to make before returning to the ocean depths.
