Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 is now confirmed to be on the way, continuing the story of Sawai's Cate Randa as she delves deeper into the world of titans.

Following her SAG award win for her role in Shōgun, Sawai addresses her Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 future while taking questions in the award show's press room, which ScreenRant was present in. The star remains tight-lipped when it comes to specific details, but she does tease that the show's sophomore outing will be grand in scale. It also sounds like viewers shouldn't expect everyone to make it through the season alive. Check out Sawai's comment below:

I don't know if I'm allowed to tease anything at this point, but I can say we go on a huge journey. We'll go in different directions, we lose some people, we find some people... I think that's kind of it. But it's very exciting.

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1.

The Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1 finale served as a major shakeup for the show, concluding some storylines while setting up others. One of the biggest developments in this finale was, of course, the apparent death of Kurt Russell's Lee Shaw, a key character throughout the season. Lee seemingly sacrifices himself to ensure Cate and other characters reach safety, but it's notable that viewers never see a body. The door has clearly been left open here for Shaw to return in season 2, and Sawai's comment s that.

This also wouldn't be the first time the show has revealed a seemingly dead character is actually alive. Keiko Randa (Mari Yamamoto) appeared to perish relatively early on in the show, only to return when the rest of the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters cast of characters find her in what becomes known as Axis Mundi. With the final moments of season 1 featuring a Kong cameo, season 2 will seemingly be focusing far more on this titan over Godzilla, but Sawai's tease about character deaths suggests things won't be getting any more safe.

Our Take On Sawai's Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Tease

Will The Show Kill Off A Main Character In Season 2?

Shaw is the only true main character in Monarch to seemingly die, but the show hasn't been averse to killing off ing characters thus far. During the team's mission to Alaska to search for Hiroshi Randa (Takehiro Hira), pilot Du-Ho (Bruce Baek) experiences a chilly end when the Frost Vark freezes him to death in a matter of seconds.

It's likely that more ing characters will be dying in Monarch season 2, but it's possible that viewers will also have to bid farewell to more prominent figures in the cast, like May (Kiersey Clemons), Tim (Joe Tippett), or Kentaro (Ren Watabe). It remains to be seen which characters will die, but it sounds like Monarch: Legacy of Monsters won't be losing its edge when it eventually returns.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 started filming in July 2024 but doesn't yet have a confirmed release window.
