One of Monk's only flaws was its problem with recasting actors and characters, and it surprisingly lasted all the way to Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie. Recasting characters and actors is usually a bad thing. Some viewers simply prefer the original actor over their replacement, while others can't just suspend their disbelief and accept that a major character looks completely different and none of their friends seem to have noticed. At the very least, most audience notice recastings, which draws their attention away from the story at hand, and Monk is one of the worst offenders in that regard.
Every Monk fan is aware of how Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram) left in Monk season 3 and was replaced by Natalie Teeger (Traylor Howard). That, however, was more of a replacement than a recasting, as Natalie and Sharona were very different characters. Though Monk managed to survive its first major cast shakeup, it would struggle with another casting difficulty for the next five seasons and a movie. That problem was how often Monk recast major characters and reused actors for various roles.
Monk Kept Recasting Characters & Actors
Monk Used Different Actors For The Same Characters & The Same Actors For Different Characters Constantly
Throughout Monk's eight seasons, the show changed the faces of major characters multiple times. The two main subjects of those recastings were Adrian's wife, Trudy Monk, and his nemesis, Dale "The Whale" Biederbeck. Trudy was recast once - she was played by Stellina Rusich until 2003 and by Melora Hardin from 2004 onward - along with having a different actress, Lindy Newton, play the young Trudy in a single episode. Likewise, Dale "The Whale" was recast twice in Monk: he was first played by Adam Arkin in 2002, then Tim Curry took over the role in 2004, and Ray Porter played him in 2008.

Monk didn't just recast notable characters, though, it also reused dozens of actors for different characters. For example, Ed Fusco played a scientist, a taxi driver, and a police officer in four different seasons of Monk. Additionally, Tony Shalhoub's brother, Michael, and wife, Brooke Adams, have both played multiple different characters in Monk, though their casting is more understandable. Aside from those notable examples, Monk used dozens of actors for various unnamed characters, police officers, and single-episode appearances. Once you notice it, the sheer number of recastings in Monk almost becomes a distraction, and it can nearly ruin the immersion.
Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie Also Recast A Major Role
Molly Evans Was Played By Alona Tal In Monk & Caitlin McGee In Mr. Monk's Last Case
Monk's problem with recasting didn't end with the show, however. Mr. Monk's Last Case: A Monk Movie also recast a major character. At the Mr. Monk's Last Case 2 could happen, and bring more recastings with it.

20 Best Monk Episodes, Ranked
Monk had numerous beloved and brilliant episodes over its 8 seasons. Many received critical acclaim and even earned the show several accolades.
Molly's recasting in Mr. Monk's Last Case did, ittedly, make a lot more sense. There were plenty of reasons why Caitlin McGee played Molly Evans in the film. Mr. Monk's Last Case came out 14 years after the series finale of Monk, and Tal had such a small role in the show that the creators likely thought no one would care much if she was recast, or it could at the very least be explained by saying that Molly's appearance changed as she aged. Molly also played a much bigger role in the movie, and McGee simply had more star power than Tal did in Monk.
