The Impact of Adding Margot Robbie to Monopoly

While Lionsgate did not link the ongoing development of Monopoly to the resurgence of the toy-based film adaptation, it stands to reason that Barbie may have inspired the production company to push forward with Monopoly.

News of the Monopoly movie itself is not new. The film was originally announced back in 2008, with Universal Pictures set to produce. The film has since changed hands in of both studios and directors, until finally receiving a more substantial update in 2019 that stated that Kevin Hart was set to star in the film. Then, there appeared to be radio silence on the project for years, until in late 2023, Lionsgate revealed that Monopoly was still in development.

While Monopoly’s development was announced long before Barbie, its timing is worth noting. For Mattel, the success of Barbie has led the company to push forward on several other toy-based films. Mattel’s toy movies include movies such as Hot Wheels, American Girl Doll, Polly Pocket, and Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots. While Lionsgate did not link the ongoing development of Monopoly to the resurgence of the toy-based film adaptation, it stands to reason that Barbie may have inspired the production company to push forward with Monopoly.

Barbie is currently available to stream on Max.

Hiring Robbie as a producer seems to this point. While the update did not say whether Robbie would also star in Monopoly, her role as a producer will allow her some creative direction in the project. This paid off well with Barbie, so it may be Hasbro’s hope that they can achieve similar success as their rival toy company. Robbie’s producing career has also been taking off in recent years, even beyond Barbie (e.g. Saltburn, Maid), so her talent is a powerful tool.

As helpful as Robbie may be to Monopoly, hiring her is a double-edged sword. The fact that Robbie is involved in Monopoly will make it more likely that the film will be subject to Barbie comparisons. In a way, this is unfair, as Barbie dolls propose a very different adaptation challenge than a board game. Even though they are both retail products, the cinematic possibilities are vastly different. Still, audiences will associate Robbie with the Barbie name, setting the bar high for Monopoly as it faces potential comparisons.
