A new weapon for Monster Hunter Now, the Heavy Bowgun, can now be unlocked and used in hunts against dangerous monsters coming to Season 3. The Curse of the Wandering Flames update adds the Heavy Bowgun to the arsenal of tools available for your Hunter. Featuring heavy ranged attacks, this weapon is slower than most but has extremely high damage with the right ammo types.
Bowguns are among some of the best weapons in Monster Hunter games because of their unique customization options. The Heavy Bowgun is no different, allowing you to switch between various ammunition that all have unique strengths and weaknesses. Typically, this weapon fires slow but heavy shots from long-range against monsters, with little mobility but incredibly high damage.
How To Unlock The Heavy Bowgun
Find And Upgrade This Powerful New Weapon
Those looking to add a Heavy Bowgun to their Hunter's arsenal need to participate in limited-time events that demand the use of this weapon. These quests will introduce you to the Heavy Bowgun and give you rewards tied to the weapon. However, these quests in Monster Hunter Now only last from September 12th, 2024 until November 30th, 2024, so make sure to do them quickly.

"A Simplistic Introduction To The World of Monster Hunter" - Monster Hunter Now Review
Monster Hunter Now has a lot to offer to fans of Monster Hunter World, but those who prefer the classic games may find this falling short.
Every seasonal quest tied to the Heavy Bowgun you complete will give you the materials needed to craft the weapon for yourself. The Bone Shooter is your starting Heavy Bowgun, which can be upgraded using Heavy Bowgun Training Tickets you earn. These Tickets are gained from the same limited-time quests you finish, giving you a chance to get an improved weapon relatively fast.
You do not need Heavy Bowgun Training Tickets to upgrade the weapon past Grade 7, but these Tickets do not improve other Heavy Bowguns besides the Bone Shooter you get early.
Unlike the Insect Glaive in Monster Hunter or any other melee weapon, you have to unlock ammo for the Heavy Bowgun as well. An individual Heavy Bowgun has three different ammo types that determine your overall build. You can gain crafting materials for ammo types from monsters you defeat, with Heavy Bowguns made from one monster usually crafting its ammo from the same creature.
How To Use The Heavy Bowgun (Tips & Tricks)
Recognize Ammo Type Differences To Customize Your Build
Every Heavy Bowgun has four key categories you need to pay attention to, including the weapon's:
- Ammo Type
- Clip Size
- Recoil
- Reload Time
Saving crafting items in Monster Hunter games will allow you to make a variety of Ammo Types for your Bowgun weapons. Heavy Bowguns in Monster Hunter Now have four unique types of Ammo - Normal, Spread, Slicing, and Wyvern. Each type of ammo you get can be infused with various elements, like Thunder or Dragon, to specifically target the weakness of monsters you come across.

When you craft a Heavy Bowgun, it will come with automatic ammo types with their Clip Size, Recoil, and Reload Time. These factors affect how the weapon plays, even in comparison to another Heavy Bowgun you may have already created. On average, you can expect certain Ammo Types to have specific properties, but some weapons are exceptions to the rule.
Ammo Type |
Average Clip Size |
Average Recoil |
Average Reload Time |
---|---|---|---|
Normal |
4–5 shots |
Low |
Fast |
Spread |
7–8 shots |
Average |
Very Slow |
Slicing |
3–4 shots |
High |
Very Slow |
Wyvern |
2–3 shots |
Wyvern (Very High) |
Slow |
Some Heavy Bowguns have unique Ammo Types outside the main four, from Sticky Ammo with High Recoil to Cluster Fire Ammo with a very small average Clip Size. Experiment with different Heavy Bowguns to see which one suits your playstyle best with the Ammo it can carry.
Every Heavy Bowgun you craft has one of two possible special moves you can perform while out on a hunt. Similar to how Wirebugs in Monster Hunter Rise gave you unique moves, you can make a Heavy Bowgun with the Wyvernheart or Wyversnipe ability. Wyvernheart causes your Hunter to go prone and fire a high-powered single shot, while Wyvernheart sees you quickly unload a volley of rapid-fire shots into a monster.
You need to consider which special ability of this weapon works best for your character with any gear you have. The best way to use a Heavy Bowgun you unlock in Monster Hunter Now is to synergize all of its properties with your current set to challenge the new and deadly monsters being added to Season 3 of the game.
