As the release of the highly anticipated Monster Hunter Wilds draws nearer, Capcom has revealed a plethora of new monsters, with some fan favorites making their way in as well. While there are bound to be even more surprises in the full game, one returning monster will provide a uniquely challenging encounter. Not only will the legendary Gore Magala appear in its highest fidelity yet for the series, but Wilds might also finally showcase what makes the chaotic dragon-like creature a truly horrifying monster.

Gore Magala's fighting abilities and its classical horror-inspired design are both unique, so there's little surprise that it's one of the most requested monsters in the franchise. While fans only got to see a few seconds of an obscured Gore Magala in the latest trailer, it looks even more intimidating than ever. Although Gore Magala has already appeared recently in Monster Hunter Rise, the advanced ecology and scope of Monster Hunter Wilds could take its hunting experience to even greater heights than ever before.

Gore Magala Is Far From An Ordinary Monster

One Of The Most Mysterious Monsters In The Franchise

After facing Gore Magala for the first time, just about anyone can understand there's something different about this mysterious and brooding monster. Aside from its successor Shagura Magala's classification as an Elder Dragon, Gore Magala remains an entirely unknown type of monster, with its origins only being hinted at through translated sources. Covered head to toe in jet-black scales, Gore Magala prowls the wilds with its tattered wings wrapped around it like a cloak, savagely attacking any monster or hunter it comes across.

Gore Magala is also unique in being a juvenile form of Shagura Magala, transforming it into an even more powerful and ferocious monster.

Aside from its grim appearance, one of the unique features of Gore Magala is that it doesn't use its eyes to make its way around the environment, employing its dispersed scales to sense its surroundings instead. These scales do more than just help Gore Magala see: they afflict any that come into for too long with the deadly frenzy virus, heightening the target's speed, aggression, and strength, at the cost of eliminating their ability to heal.

Monster Hunter Wilds' second beta is painting a great picture for the full game but there is one massive problem for PC players.

This frenzy state can also be a double-edged sword for players, as it encourages a higher risk vs reward playstyle after being afflicted by the virus. This motivation is further enhanced by the armor abilities crafted from Gore Magala itself, which extend that gameplay approach to other fights by rewarding taking damage without healing.

Monster Hunter Wilds' Could Unlock Gore Magala's Hidden Nature

Taking Gore Magala's Horror Inspirations To The Next Level

While the cloaked vampire-like appearance of Gore Magala and its unique fighting style make for an incredibly distinct hunting experience, there's even more to the monster than its in-game appearances. As translated by lutyrannus on X, Gore Magala doesn't reproduce by ordinary means, but infects other monsters with its frenzied scales, slowly transforming the host into another Gore Magala.

While the original concept would have had the new Gore Magala burst out of the frenzied monster's body, much like a Xenomorph from the iconic Alien franchise, it was eventually altered to be a more natural transformation instead. Although the slower parasiticidal transformation is only slightly climactic, it makes Gore Magala a more realistic addition to the game world while staying true to its horror inspirations, sharing great similarities with how the legendary Fatalist replicates itself by transforming hunters who wear its armor.

Why Monster Hunter Wilds' New Trailer Showing Off Nerscylla & Gore Magala Is A Great Sign

Monster Hunter Wilds has confirmed the return of two fan-favorite monsters, Nerscylla and Gore Magala, a good sign for longtime fans of the series.

As a returning monster, it's unlikely that Gore Magala will take a significant role in Monster Hunter Wilds' story, but it could still have a significant effect on the ecosystem and other monsters inhabiting it. A frenzied Arkveld would make for an even more climactic fight than what players experienced in the second beta test, pushing the title monster to even greater heights. Taking advantage of the highly aggressive and sporadic movements of the frenzy state, combined with its devastating dragon-empowered chain attacks, a Frenzied Arkveld could easily strike fear into the hearts of experienced hunters and other monsters alike.

Whether the game opts to take this approach with Arkveld or not, afflicting an even more powerful monster with Gore Magala's parasitic scales could be a game-changer for Monster Hunter Wilds. This is the perfect opportunity to create a deadlier hybrid monster while showcasing what the process would look like in the game's high-fidelity cutscenes.

The Frenzy Virus Could Be Greatly Expanded In Monster Hunter Wilds

Bringing Gore Magala To Life With Fully Fleshed Out Ecology

Gore Magala activating his ability in Monster Hunter Rise

Monster Hunter Wilds is already introducing multiple mechanics that would pair excellently with Gore Magala's frenzy virus, adding another layer of chaos for unprepared hunters. With Gore Magala's original appearance in Monster Hunter 4, certain monsters like Deviljho, Gravios, and Zinogre, among others, could take advantage of the empowered state of the frenzy virus without suffering its deadly side effects.

Given that Monster Hunter Wilds is the most ambitious project in the franchise to date, it aims to provide a more immersive experience not only through its regular gameplay but also through offering a living world that can be seamlessly explored. While the empowered state already afflicted these monsters before being hunted, Wilds could add frenzy as a status effect for monsters that come into with Gore Magala, adding a much-needed layer of difficulty to regular hunts.

The mystery is one of the aspects that makes Gore Magala such a memorable encounter, but Wilds also has the perfect chance to explore its lore in satisfying detail. Players may have to wait for the full release of Monster Hunter Wilds to see if Capcom decides to expand on Gore Magala's haunting biology, but it's bound to become a fan-favorite for a whole new generation regardless.
