Mortal Kombat 11 may be out, but that's not the end of its character roster. NetherRealm Studios has now given a glimpse of what's to come in the game's Kombat Pack, with a trailer showcasing longtime series character Shang Tsung in action. Not only that, but the trailer also hints at what other characters are to come.
Shang Tsung has been with Mortal Kombat since the beginning. The boss of the first game in the series, he immediately became an icon of the series, in part due to his morphing abilities that make him a formidable Mortal Kombat character. Although he has not appeared in every game, he has been a mainstay of the series, albeit only as a cameo in previous entry Mortal Kombat X.
The sorcerer is back for Mortal Kombat 11, even if it is only as a DLC character rather than in his usual form as a boss. As showcased in the trailer below, Shang Tsung is back and is looking to claim souls once more, and his morphing abilities seem to have been given a fun upgrade as well. In the trailer, Shang Tsung combines the powers of Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Noob Saibot via a fantastic transformation that is bound to be a force to be reckoned with.
Long-term fans of Mortal Kombat will also be pleased to see a familiar face for Shang Tsung. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa played Shang Tsung in the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie adaptation, and the actor is back again to portray the villain this time around. It's a neat touch that will likely be appreciated by those who pick up the character, with Shang Tsung available for Kombat Pack owners from June 18.
It's not the only beloved performance from the nineties that will be coming back for Mortal Kombat 11 either. even if Bruce Campbell has squashed the rumor.
All in all, it's a pretty solid roster of characters for Mortal Kombat 11's Kombat Pack. Whether it will be enough to help players forget about some of the controversies surrounding the game is another matter entirely. After all, between the microtransactions in Warner Bros. games, a fantastic fighting game has been overshadowed by other matters entirely.
