With its predecessor’s director Simon McQuoid returning, Mortal Kombat 2 seeks to continue the further adventures of martial artist Cole Young, a non-game character created for the movies. However, Young will obviously be ed by the likes of Raiden, Sonya Kang, and Jax among many others. Another edition of the titular fatality-filled competition can be covered in the sequel.

Mortal Kombat 2 could sur the previous movie in of even more brutal violence - and considering all the new characters that are being introduced now, this potential for a grittier action movie only increases. Not much is known about the story so far, but casting updates are frequent with some high-profile stars ing the sequel. This new cast also includes actors who have previously had significant experience with sci-fi and action properties, with some coming from The Boys, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Power Rangers.

Hiroyuki Sanada As Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion

Among the ones leading the Mortal Kombat 2 cast, Japanese screen legend Hiroyuki Sanada will be returning as the undead ninja Hanzo Hasashi (AKA Scorpion). Even though Mortal Kombat 2 can tell its Scorpion story with a lot more background this time, Hasashi is bound to indulge in some brutal fight scenes given his character’s signature kunai-rope dart kills. Sanada started out in Japanese movies and is known for playing the university professor Ryuji Takayama in the original Ring and master swordsman Ujio in The Last Samurai. He has also appeared in The Wolverine as the kendo-trained businessman Shingen and in Bullet Train as the ex-yakuza member The Elder.

Chin Han As Shang Tsung

Shang Tsung is an evil sorcerer who can absorb the souls of his defeated enemies and even shapeshift into other characters. Indulging in several video game-style boss battles, Shang Tsung is extremely powerful and ruthless. Chin Han, who played the antagonist in Mortal Kombat, will be reprising his role in the sequel. Singaporean actor Chin Han s the Mortal Kombat 2 cast as Shang Tsung. Han boasts a multi-genre filmography that includes performances like the criminal banker Lau in The Dark Knight, World Security Council member Yen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the titular protagonist’s father Simon Wang in American Born Chinese.

Tati Gabrielle As Jade

Tati Gabrielle is one of the newcomers ing the Mortal Kombat 2 cast. The You star plays Jade, a villainous character who serves as one of the elite assassins working under the Outworld Emperor Shao Kahn. Jade can be a tough fighter due to her immunity to projectile attacks and her weapon of choice, a bo staff. Gabrielle is best known for playing librarian-turned-artist Marienne Bellamy in You, digital security head Hannah Kim in Kaleidoscope, Sabrina rival witch, Prudence Blackwood, in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and the villainous mercenary Jo Braddock in Uncharted. Gabrielle has also voiced adventurer Kai Li Cain in Batman: The Doom that Came to Gotham.

Jessica McNamee As Sonya Blade

Jessica McNamee reprises her role as Sonya Blade, an ex-U.S. Special Forces officer who has done immense research on the Mortal Kombat tournament. While Mortal Kombat showed her fighting skills, friendship with Jax and a surprising fatality, Mortal Kombat 2 can explore her relationship with characters like Johnny and Cassie Cage (as seen in the video games). Apart from playing Sonya, McNamee is known for appearing as patrol officer Theresa Kelly in Sirens and diver-submarine pilot Lori Taylor in The Meg. The Australian actor played real-life tennis great Margaret Court in Battle of the Sexes and Rachel McAdams’ on-screen sister Gwen in The Vow.

Lewis Tan As Cole Young

MMA fighter Cole Young became the unlikely hero of the first movie, relying on his combat skills and kinetic energy-absorbing armor. Cole Young is also probably winning Mortal Kombat 2’s tournament given his improved power levels and his previous victories over decorated champions like Goro. Lewis Tan returns to the Mortal Kombat 2 cast as the heroic fighter. Tan’s Mortal Kombat performance showed his potential as a lead actor in movies. His previous TV credits include custom garage owner Lu Xin Lee in Wu Assassins and mercenary-turned-royal guard Tolya Yul-Bataar in Shadow and Bone. The actor-stuntman-model has also had a role in Deadpool 2 as the mutant superhero Shatterstar.

Joe Taslim As Noob Saibot/ Elder Sub-Zero

Indonesian actor and martial artist Joe Taslim is also a part of the Mortal Kombat 2 cast despite his character Bi-Han (Sub-Zero) being killed off in the first movie. As was the case in the later games, Taslim’s Bi-Han will appear in a resurrected form as the wraith Noob Saibot (AKA the Elder Sub-Zero). But with the mantle of Sub-Zero ing to his brother Kuai Liang, Mortal Kombat 2 can feature a new Sub-Zero. Taslim has been involved in several action-heavy properties before, like Warrior in which he played a Tong crime syndicate’s enforcer Li Yong and The Raid in which portrayed special forces unit leader Jaka.

Mehcad Brooks As Jax

Some of the classic Mortal Kombat fighters returning to the sequel include Jackson “Jax” Briggs, the ex-Special Forces Major who now fights with mechanical arms given to him by Raiden. Much like his peer Sonya, Jax balances strategic reasoning with brute strength. Jax is played by Mehcad Brooks whom Supergirl fans will as photojournalist James Olsen (who also briefly becomes the superhero Guardian). As of Law & Order's season 22, Brooks began appearing as NYPD Detective Jalen Shaw. He’s also known for playing the homicidal student Matthew Applewhite in season 2 of Desperate Housewives and protagonist Melanie’s ex-boyfriend Jerome in The Game.

Damon Herriman As Quan Chi

The Mortal Kombat 2 cast includes Damon Herriman but in a different role. The Australian actor had previously voiced Kano’s former ally Kabal in Mortal Kombat. But in the sequel, he plays the villainous free-roaming sorcerer Quan Chi who served as one of the main villains in the older games. Herriman is best known for playing notorious cult leader and convict Charles Manson in Mindhunter and Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. Before his spine-chilling take on Charles Manson, Herriman also appeared in Justified as Dewey Crowe, one of the stooges working under the series’ main villain and crimelord Boyd Crowder.

Tadanobu Asano As Lord Raiden

Raiden, the God of Thunder, houses Earthrealm warriors in his temple where he also provides them with adequate combat training. While Raiden didn’t have much to do in the first movie, Mortal Kombat 2 can fix Raiden by fleshing out his divine powers even further. The character is played by Tadanobu Asano who is no stranger to hyperviolent movies. The Japanese actor is known for playing the psychologically troubled yakuza enforcer Kakihara in Ichi the Killer and Genghis Khan in Mongol. He has also appeared in the Thor movies as the Asgardian warrior Hogun, a Japanese interpreter in Silence and 18th-century warlord Kira Yoshinaka in 47 Ronin.

Ludi Lin As Liu Kang

Liu Kang, who has served as the protagonist in many Mortal Kombat games and previous movies, was relegated to a ing character in the 2021 reboot. While he still gets some of the movie’s best fight scenes, his status as one of Earthrealm’s greatest warriors leaves a lot of potential to explore in the second chapter. The Mortal Kombat 2 cast brings back Ludi Lin to play the Bruce Lee-inspired character who previously played a similar video game fighter in the Black Mirror episode “Striking Vipers”. Lin’s history with reboots goes back to the 2017 Power Rangers movie in which he played Black Ranger Zack Taylor.
