There is often a complaint towards Hollywood for the seeming lack of originality, specifically in of the reliance on remakes. While this can be a problem for some, there are times when it is fun to see a new take on a familiar story. Luckily for fans of movie remakes, 2022 has a lot to offer throughout the year.
The most exciting remakes coming this year include something for everyone, from family-friendly adventures to retellings of classic horror movies. There are some remakes that are bringing back well-known stories and some that are giving a second chance to some overlooked ones. With all of the 2022 remakes ahead, it will be interesting to see if any can sur their originals.
Firestarter
Iconic author Firestarter from 1984 which starred a young Drew Barrymore.
The story of a young girl who develops pyrotechnic abilities is getting a retelling with Zac Efron playing the father of the young girl with the dangerous abilities, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. It is an interesting thriller story and the father-daughter aspect could make for an impactful new version.
Cheaper By The Dozen
Fans are probably most familiar with the 2003 version of Cheaper by the Dozen starring Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt which was itself a remake of the 1950 version. The simple concept for the family comedy finds a father having to deal with the various complications of taking care of his twelve kids when his wife is out of town.
The new version was co-written by Black-ish creator Kenya Barris and will star Gabrielle Union and Zack Braff as the heads of a blended family attempting the manage their various children and their family business. With the talent involved, this could be a much more interesting family comedy than simply another retread.
Crimes Of The Future
While remakes usually feature new filmmakers taking on the material of others, Crimes of the Future offers a rare instance of a filmmaker redoing their own movie. Acclaimed horror movie auteur David Cronenberg first made Crimes of the Future in 1970 without gaining much attention.
With a higher standing in the movie business now, Cronenberg is able to reapproach the sci-fi story with the likes of Viggo Mortensen and Kristen Stewart in the cast. The movie is set in the not-too-distant future as humanity undergoes a metamorphosis.
Salem's Lot
Yet another of Stephen King's works is getting a remake in 2022 with a new version of Salem's Lot. The 1975 novel follows a young writer who returns to his hometown to find inspiration for his new book. But while there, he discovers the town is being preyed upon by a vampire.
The movie has been adapted several times with the most popular being the 1979 two-part made-for-television movie. It will be interesting to see how the terrifying story is brought to the big screen, especially with writer-director Gary Dauberman who has helmed horror movies like Annabelle and The Nun.
Father Of The Bride
Much like Cheaper by the Dozen, Father of the Bride was a family comedy from 1950 which was later remade into a more popular version starring Steve Martin. And once again, the movie finds itself being retold again in 2022 with an updated approach.
The new version will focus on a Cuban-American family with Andy Garcia stepping into the role of the titular father. It is an interesting approach as Garcia is not known as a comedic performer and seems like an unusual choice to take over for Martin, but the story is ultimately a sweet one about family and it will be fun to see this new take on the material.
Hellraiser
As the face of the long-running horror franchise, Pinhead is one of the most iconic movie villains of all time. However, his debut movie Hellraiser is often overlooked as the nuanced and unsettling horror story about an ancient artifact that unleashed demons who delight in torturing their victims.
Much like many of the other horror movie icons of the past, Pinhead is getting an update for modern audiences. This will be the eleventh Hellraiser movie to date but it will mark the first time that Pinhead is played by a female actor with Jamie Clayton taking on the role in the remake.
The Toxic Avenger
It is not just well-known hits that get remakes as Hollywood occasionally likes to revisit the potential of a cult classic. Such is the case with low-budget Trauma horror movie that gained a huge following.
The remake is already getting a lot of attention thanks to the very exciting casting of Peter Dinklage in the lead role as a janitor who falls into radioactive waste and becomes a superpowered hero. The movie also stars the likes of Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon while promising to be a wild ride.
Pinocchio
It has been a common trend for Disney to remake their classic animated movies, such as The Lion King and Aladdin. So it was only a matter of time before they got around to one of their most beloved stories with Pinocchio.
The live-action adventure will be directed by Robert Zemeckis and will star Tom Hanks as Geppetto the lonely carpenter who makes a wooden boy who is magically brought to life. Interestingly, the movie will compete with Guillermo del Toro's darker stop-motion animated version of the classic story.
Death On The Nile
The murder mystery genre has seen a resurgence as of late with movies like Knives Out entertaining audiences. Murder on the Orient Express followed suit by Death on the Nile, as both the famed detective Hercule Poirot and the movie's director.
Though it is a sequel, Death on the Nile was already adapted into a popular 1978 movie. This new adaptation features an all-star cast including Gal Gadot, Letitia Wright, and Russell Brand.
Matilda
The strange and quirky family-friendly adventure Matilda is a nostalgic movie for many fans who grew up in the 1990s. It follows the titular young girl whose brilliant mind is overlooked by her mean-spirited parents and her cruel principal. But with the of her true friends, she is able to take a stand.
Though based on the same Roald Dahl book, the new remake will certainly have to contend with the popularity of the 1996 movie. But the movie boasts an impressive cast, including Emma Thompson as the evil Miss Trunchbull.
