Marvel has put some strange alliances in the comics over the years, but when the mythological and galactic characters of the Thor and Loki stories get brought into the mix, there are some truly odd relationships that form amongst these heroes and villains.

These friendships could be strange on a number of levels, from the surprise of secret siblings to completely alternate ideologies or the bizarre nature in which the friendship came about in the first place. Needless to say, these tales of Asgard can be weird and wacky but have also produced some of Marvel's most touching and hilarious partnerships.

Honorable Mention: Angela And The Asgardians

Angela in the midst of a bloody battle in the Marvel Comics

Angela's history in the comics is complicated. Originally appearing in the Spawn comics, she would be the subject of a legal battle between creators Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman, which the latter ultimately won. He sold her rights to Marvel Comics after this.

Angela was brought into Marvel as a villain of sorts, an attacking angel who would later turn out to be the sister of Thor. Their eventual friendship is strange on a number of levels, but in a very meta sense it's odd to see this comic creation as part of the Thor and Marvel mythology after originating elsewhere.

Thor, Loki, And Balder

Balder The Brave in Marvel comics

Speaking of siblings, the three main brothers in the Thor comics are the god of thunder, Loki, and Balder. There are many differences amongst this trio, yet they remain friends despite everything that has happened over the years.

Loki's friendship with Thor, in particular, is one of the most complex in all of comic book history. They have fought time and time again, but at the end of the day, they are still family. It's strange to see the three together, although Loki has manipulated Balder on more than one occasion.

Enchantress And The Executioner

Skurge-Executioner and Enchantress Marvel

Introduced to the MCU in while he didn't receive too much screentime, the Executioner found himself serving Hela in a similar role to that of the comics. However, in the source material, it is Enchantress whom he comes to befriend and work with.

This is a strange alliance fuelled by the Executioner's deep desire for Enchantress. The sorceress has created this friendship due to her own powers of manipulation but the partnership definitely works in her favor as she has a bodyguard to protect her from brutes like Thor.

The Asgardians Of The Galaxy

Asgardians of the Galaxy Angela and Valkeyrie, Throg and Destroyer

Although fans are 3, the comics have already showcased why this is one of the strangest groups to have ever formed. The idea of the squad was to have these deities protect the galaxy from imminent threats.

The team consists of characters like Angela, Throg, Thunderstrike, and Kid Loki amongst others, which is one of the oddest collections of people from the comics. These friendships shouldn't work considering the weird corners of the galaxy each hero (or antihero) hails from, yet somehow the team functions in a (mostly) friendly way.

Donald Blake And Jane Foster

Jane Foster Thor and Young Thor comics

Donald Blake has been the human identity of Thor for some time. During one storyline, however, the two beings split from one another, resulting in two distinct personalities. During the comics Jane Foster also takes the part of Odinson's identity, becoming the new Mighty Thor.

These two would come together and form a strong friendship, one that really doesn't make a lot of sense. It's as if two sides of Thor's personality have come out and are now interacting with one another; bring the real Odinson into this and it's an even more complicated friendship.

Moonstar And The Valkyrie

Dani Moonstar Champion of Life Valkreyie on a horse

Danielle Moonstar has gone by many names in her career. She was most known to fans as Mirage, a member of the New Mutants. This world of the X-Men rarely crossed over with that of the Asgardians, so it was strange to see Moonstar the Valkyries.

She would become one of the few outsiders who were able to the group. Eventually, she would step down when her powers disappeared, although since then she has remained firm friends with the Valkyries and partnered with them again after the events of M-Day disappeared.

Verity Willis And Loki

Verity Willis in Loki: Agent of Asgard

Anyone who understands the character of Loki would know he has a disdain for mere mortals. His Kid Loki persona meant that he had a bit of a change of heart, but as he moved into his teenage years his moral com was a little bit greyer.

He ends up befriending a woman named Verity Willis, though, who can see the truth of any lie. Without being able to use his trickster abilities, Loki would end up warming to Willis. It's an odd beginning to a friendship considering Loki's past but it's clear to see why it works.

Beta Ray Bill And Thor

Beta Ray Bill and Thor

Beta Ray Bill is an incredibly strange character. A horse-like alien, it's even more bizarre that he is worthy of Stormbreaker, a hammer much like Thor's. The two stand for very similar things and have teamed up with one another on a number of occasions.

Few could be considered as worthy, but with Thor and Bill sharing the title, this has to be one of the strangest friendships in the comics. Fans are certainly eager to potentially see a live-action version of the eccentric character down the line.

The Cabal

The Cabal assembles in Marvel Comics.

Friendships and alliances can sometimes intertwine. It's unclear whether the female version of Loki trusted anyone in the Dark Illuminati known as the Cabal, but she spent a great deal of time with the group during Norman Osborn's Dark Reign.

Consisting of like Namor, Doctor Doom, and the Green Goblin himself, it was a strange set of alliances but one with an end goal in mind. Loki even enjoyed company like Emma Frost, perhaps finding common ground with her. These friendships of course fell away as soon as Osborn's reign was at an end.

Throg And His Allies

Frog Thor Marvel Comic Throg

Throg is another incredibly odd character from Thor mythology. He really is a frog that has the powers of the worthy one and even a tiny Mjolnir to prove that he has what it takes to take on the abilities of the god of thunder.

Throg's own alliances are just as bizarre, with the character even ing the Pet Avengers. Throg also has a firm friendship with Thor, who has seemingly looked past his partner's species and instead come to respect him as an equal.
