In the middle of cheesy family sitcoms and over-the-top dramas is best friends. Many people are jealous of this bond and wish that they had it for themselves, especially since Lorelai is all about junk food and not so into green veggies.
There are a lot of movies featuring great mother/daughter relationships that everyone should check out. While some are tragic, most of these flicks are light-hearted, and they're all perfect for those in the mood for a girly movie night.
Stepmom
Julia Roberts' role in Stepmom is timeless. She plays Isabel, a photographer who is excited to marry Luke (Ed Harris) but has to learn to be a stepmother to his children. Tragically, their mother Jackie (Susan Sarandon) is dying of cancer.
Fans of Gilmore Girls like Rory and Lorelai because they give each other dating and life advice, and Isabel is a wealth of information for Jackie's children who are dealing with mean classmates and the perils of growing up.
Bad Moms Christmas
In the 2017 sequel to Bad Moms, the three rebellious parents are now facing their own mother drama. Carla (Kathryn Hahn) hopes she can repair things with her estranged mom Isis (Susan Sarandon), Kiki (Kristen Bell) has to deal with her mom living with her during the holidays, and Amy (Mila Kunis) tries not to take everything her mom Ruth (Christine Baranski) says so personally.
This movie didn't receive amazing reviews, but Mila Kunis is entertaining and people will relate to how tough family can be during the holidays.
Because I Said So
The 2007 film Because I Said So stars Mandy Moore and Diane Keaton as a very close daughter and mother... perhaps too close for Moore's character Milly's liking. This is one of Mandy Moore's best roles and it's relatable for anyone who loves their parent but wants a bit of space sometimes, too.
This is a perfect mother/daughter flick for fans of Lorelai and Rory's dynamic as there's almost a whole season where the two characters don't spend time together. Even everyone's favorite TV mother and daughter know that space is necessary sometimes. Lauren Graham even plays Milly's sister Maggie, too.
Blockers
Blockers is a hilarious comedy about parents being nervous about their teens growing up too fast, and it's also a great mother/daughter story.
Leslie Mann's character Lisa has always parented her daughter Julie (Kathryn Newton) solo, so it's tough for her to let go, but she ultimately learns the lesson that allowing this natural process is necessary.
Father Of The Bride Part 2
While the first movie, which was released in 1991, sees Steve Martin's character George Banks trying to say goodbye to his daughter, who is getting married, the sequel focuses on the mother/daughter relationship a lot more.
In the second film, which came out in 1995, both Nina (Diane Keaton) and her daughter Annie are pregnant. They have a sweet relationship and since their due dates are pretty close together, this makes them even closer.
The Meddler
In the 2015 film The Meddler, Susan Sarandon plays Marnie, a mother who can't help but get overly invested in her daughter Lori's (Rose Byrne) life.
Lorelai might not meddle, but her mother Emily Gilmore definitely does, so this is a great movie that explores that tricky dynamic where a daughter wants independence and their mother just can't step away.
Freaky Friday (1995)
While everyone thinks of the Freaky Friday remake starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, there was a 1995 Disney movie in 1995 that does a great job telling this infamous story of a mother and daughter switching places (literally).
Shelly Long's mother, Ellen, realizes how tough it is to be a teenage girl when she's sent back to high school, acting as her daughter Annabelle (Gabi Hoffman). Sometimes mothers and daughters just need a change of perspective in order to understand each other.
White Oleander
Based on the book by Jane Fitch, the film White Oleander tells the tragic story of Astrid (Alison Lohman), whose mother Ingrid (Michelle Pfeiffer) is put for jail for murder, forcing Astrid into the awful foster care system.
Astrid is a talented artist who does her best to get through the time before she can live on her own, and her bond with her mother is never truly broken, even if it's tough for her to understand why her mother does the things that she does. While much more intense than the relationship than Rory and Lorelai have, Astrid and Ingrid were super close before Ingrid was put away.
Anywhere But Here
While Anywhere But Here has some tragic and tough moments, since Susan Sarandon's character Adele has trouble providing for her teenage daughter Ann (Natalie Portman), it's a sweet and light-hearted film.
At times, Adele and Ann seem just like Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, eating junk food and dreaming of their future, and Ann is studious and practical just like Rory is.
The Parent Trap
The Parent Trap has great characters, especially Natasha Richardson's character, Elizabeth James, who is mother to twins Hallie and Annie.
While this movie is famous since Lindsay Lohan played both roles, it's also a beautiful story of a great mom who is reunited with the daughter she never got to know.
