The Motorola Edge (2022) and Edge+ (2022) have some design aspects and features in common, but which one of them is the better buy? The Edge series first made its debut in 2020, marking the return of Motorola to the smartphone segment after focusing on the Moto G and Moto E line for years. That year, the brand announced the flagship Motorola Edge+ and the mid-range Motorola Edge.
In 2021, Motorola launched a new version of the Edge and a handful of other mid-range Edge smartphones in India and Europe. Motorola has once again refreshed the Edge series for 2022, this time launching a new Edge+ smartphone and a more affordable Edge 2022 model. Both phones are available in the United States and are Motorola's most offerings, at least until the foldable Razr 2022 arrives.
The Motorola Edge+ (2022) which launched first is clearly the design inspiration for the Motorola Edge (2022). The two phones have a flat display with a centered punch hole for the front camera, a curved frame, and triple rear cameras. They are also both rated IP52 for dust and water resistance. However, there are some key differences. The Motorola Edge+ (2022) has a Gorilla Glass 5 back and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. In contrast, the Motorola Edge (2022) swaps the glass back for plastic and has an under-display fingerprint scanner.
The Motorola Edge+ Is More Powerful
The Edge (2022) has a 6.6-inch screen which is a tad smaller than the 6.7-inch screen of the Edge+ (2022). Both are FHD+ 10-bit OLED s with a 144Hz refresh rate, HDR10+, and Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Under the hood of the Edge+ (2022) is a of 8K video recording and 960 fps slow motion recording.
On the other hand, the Motorola Edge (2022) has a 13MP ultra-wide camera with a 120-degree field of view. It can also take macro photos, but its main camera can only record in 4K and maxes out at 120fps when recording slow motion videos. Its front-facing camera is a 32MP sensor. Motorola has equipped both phones a smart stylus similar to the S Pen which has to be purchased separately. Both devices have a USB-C port but the Edge+ (2022) s USB 3.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 while the Edge (2022) s USB 2.0. In of battery capacity, the Edge+ (2022) packs a 4,800mAh battery. In contrast, the Edge (2022) gets a slightly larger 5,000mAh battery despite having the smaller display.
Things get interesting considering the Edge+ (2022) s 68W fast charging but comes with a 30W adapter in the box while the Motorola Edge (2022), which s 30W fast charging, doesn't come with a charger. The two phones also 15W wireless charging and 5W reverse wireless charging. On the software side, Motorola ships both phones with Android 12 with the My UX skin on top. However, the flagship Motorola Edge+ (2022) will receive two years of OS upgrades and three years of security updates while the newer Motorola Edge (2022) will get three years of OS upgrades and four years of security updates.
The Motorola Edge (2022) is the cheaper of the two with its $499 price tag for the unlocked model. It will be sold through a handful of carriers but with a different configuration from the unlocked model. On the other hand, the Edge+ (2022) launched for $999 in March, but Motorola is currently selling it for $749. Save for the shorter software duration, the Motorola Edge+ (2022) is the better option with its more powerful chip, better cameras, faster charging, and bundled charger.
