Morbius has been one of the most talked about movies of 2022 so far, though the buzz is not the kind that the filmmakers were hoping for. Most of the coverage has involved either the movie's terrible reviews from both fans and critics or the shortcomings it experienced at the box office.
Though the dropoff in its returns from week one to week two was steep, Morbius was still far short of setting any kind of new record for a second-week slump. There are plenty of other movies that famously fell off after their opening weekend.
Morbius - 73.8% Drop
It's been impossible to ignore the massive amount of coverage Morbius has received online, though many of it feels like backlash that was set up from the start. Even going back to the announcement, casting and trailer for the film it felt like Morbius fans hadn't been along for the ride. So once the bad reviews started to flood in for the film the negativity took on a life of its own. Clearly many fans took the advice of critics as the films already underwhelming $40 million first week box office numbers plummeted to just over $10 million in weekend two per Box Office Mojo. The drop represents the biggest tumble for any superhero film this century going into it's second week.
Assassination Nation - 76% Drop
Before creating Euphoria for HBO Sam Levinson wrote and directed the box office flop, Assassination Nation. The reasons for its failure aren't quite as clear with critics being mixed on the movie rather than outright negative. Though the writing was pretty heavily critiqued there was also praise directed at the movies visuals and distinctive style. Clearly what positive reviews it garnered couldn't help the film shake its reputation as a flop after making just over $1 million in weekend one and it couldn't even collect one fourth of the box office pull in week two per Box Office Mojo.
Star Trek: Nemesis - 76.2% Drop
Star Trek fanatics for making no sense and for bringing about the end of The Next Generation cast. It's another film that featured pretty mixed reviews all around and clearly audiences took notice because it was a major box office failure. After an already disappointing performance its numbers dropped over $14 million in week two from $18 million to $4 million and as a result a future sequel was scrapped. While the Star Trek franchise has done well since it was rebooted years after this film, it firmly marked the end of one of the franchises most memorable eras.
All Eyez On Me - 78% Drop
Unlike many box office failures, Straight Outta Compton being a major success just a few years earlier it wasn't much of a surprise that this story of Tupac made over $25 million in its first weekend.
But after the film was given dozens of negative reviews online and heavily critiqued for its bad dialogue and surface level understanding of it's subject matter. It seems like this had an effect on audience as the film took a staggering tumble in weekend two making just under $6 Million per Box Office Mojo.
Friday The 13th (2009) - 80.4%
The 2009 reboot of the dedicated fans of Friday the 13th clearly poured out in of the new film during its first weekend which raked in $40 million. But once the reviews came out with an overwhelmingly negative reception from critics, the film failed to find new fans and the second weekend dropped all the way down to $8 million per Box Office Mojo. It goes to show that die hard fans will show out for just about anything, but that doesn't guarantee any mainstream appeal.
Replicas - 81.5% Drop
One of the most memorable box office disasters in recent memory fitting shows up as one of the biggest week two drop offs. The Keanu Reeves staring film promised an existential sci-fi spectacular but was critically panned across the board as soon as it was released. Clearly that backlash reached the general public because the movie was an even more spectacular commercial flop pulling in less than two and a half million in its first week.
Reaching that low of a total in week one makes it pretty hard to achieve a massive drop off, at least when measured by a percentage, but Replicas pulled it off. By earning under $500k in week two per Box Office Mojo, it presented an over 80% spiraling that only further mythologized it as one of the worst performing films in years.
Gigli - 81.9% Drop
One of the most famous bad movies of all time is back in people's minds with the return of Ben Affleck and J-Lo as a celebrity couple. The first time around the pair was involved in a film that bet big on their charisma and commercial appeal, ultimately losing badly. The critical reception for the film was so toxic that nearly everyone avoided it like the plague and it made less than $4 million, just a fraction of its expensive budget. That was made even worse by a second weekend where it dropped down below $1 million per Box Office Mojo, and both the studios and theaters gave up on the film entirely. It's a legendary bomb in almost every way, including a massive drop off in sales for its second week.
Before I Go To Sleep - 82% Drop
Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth's Before I Go To Sleep is a film that's much more famous for its disastrous reviews and box office failure than anything about the actual film itself. Critics panned the movie across the board and it was often equated to being a cheap copy of Christopher Nolan's classic psychological thriller Memento. That backlash meant that movie fans decided to skip the film entirely despite its high profile stars and it never came close to making up its budget making less than $2 million in week one. Any hope of the film being saved in weekend two disappeared when it took a staggering 82% drop to under 500k per Box Office Mojo, despite the reach of its theatrical release.
Jane Got A Gun - 83.5% Drop
While Jane Got A Gun may not be one of the most memorable flops in recent memory, behind the scenes it was as big of a failure as there is in the world of big budget films. After years of development hell the film still managed to land a high profile cast but it didn't help much. It received largely mixed reviews and failed to even crack $1 million in its first weekend despite being shown in over 1000 theaters. The total lack of interest in the movie became even clearer in weekend two when it managed to plummet in sales despite an already disastrous start making less than $150k per Box Office Mojo. The years of development and potential seen by everyone involved makes its collapse even harder to swallow.
National Champions - 88.4% Drop
It may come as a surprise that one of the biggest box office crashes ever seen came in recent memory, but this movie collapsed to a degree that almost seems impossible. National Champions as it failed to even make $1 million in its theatrical release, in fact it failed to even make half that. After a disappointing first week that fell well below projections it fell off the map completely in week two, netting just $34k in almost 900 theaters per Box Office Mojo. It made for a staggering 88.4% drop that cemented it as much more than just your average box office flop.
