Summary
- Some movies or entire franchises could benefit from legacy sequels, prequels, or spinoffs in the TV format.
- For example, an Ocean's 8 television series would reunite the cast that never returned for a sequel and introduce new con artists,
- A Hunger Games television series could focus on the other games not featured in the films, introducing new characters and exploring different years of the Games, allowing the franchise to grow and thrive on TV as well.
In recent years, several movie series have been revived on television, expanding the story of the world and characters created in the original premise, yet there are still a few famous films whose story should continue in a TV reboot. Box office hits often see the demand for a sequel or spin-off in their respective franchises, but it is worth considering that a format change could allow for further success. One notable example of this is Cobra Kai, the Netflix series that follows on from the events of The Karate Kid movies. Disney+ also saw success with the High School Musical TV series.
A format change can allow for more flexibility in telling a story. With multiple episodes allowing for better pacing, certain elements of the story, such as character development, can be more easily conveyed compared to a two-hour film. With more Hollywood franchises making the change from the silver screen to the smaller one, there are plenty of classic films that could make some great TV spin-offs.
10 The Legally Blonde Franchise
Elle Woods Stands Up For The World
Legally Blonde 3 is due to be released in 2024, twenty years since the last installment, and will see Reese Wetherspoon reprise the role of Elle Woods (Reese Wetherspoon.) Writer Mindy Kaling has discussed how Legally Blonde 3 will follow Elle Woods in the 2020s, and her reaction to modern-day politics and hot-topic ethical issues. However, this concept is something that could be extended past a third film. A Legally Blonde television series could not only see Elle's response to the ongoing issues in America, but it could also focus on the problems that are happening worldwide, something the character has proved to be important to her.
9 Ocean's 8
There's No Such Thing As Too Many Cons
The Ocean's films saw a lot of success during their releases, including the most recent release, Ocean's 8, which saw Sandra Bullock lead an all-female cast of various con artists. Interestingly, the film series was the inspiration for the BBC television series Hustle, which followed a group of grifters playing the long-con in a story-of-the-week format. Hustle was very successful, and even saw its own spin-off, The Real Hustle, which showed audiences how scams work.
An Ocean's television series could be a great watch, not only for an opportunity to see the films' original casts reunite but also allow for a band of new con artists to be introduced. While there are plenty of great characters who could return from the Ocean's franchise, it would be particularly interesting to see Bullock's character of Debbie return. Considering that Ocean's 8 never got a sequel, a television spinoff focused on the characters introduced in the film would be a great way to continue the story while also introducing new faces.
8 The Hunger Games Franchise
Decades Of Games To Recount
The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes was released in 2023, and reviews of The Hunger Games prequel have seen various critics' concerns over the development of the world-building of Panem. A Hunger Games television series could focus on the other games that weren't featured on-screen in any of the films, such as the Second Quarter Quell, which was won by Haymitch (Woody Harrelson.) Not only could a television series also introduce various new characters, but each season could focus on another year of The Hunger Games. There is room for the Hunger Games universe to grow, but the saga would arguably work better on TV going forward.
7 Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny
Helena Could Lead A New Generation Of Archaeologists
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Cast
- Boyd Holbrook
- Release Date
- June 30, 2023
- Runtime
- 2 hours and 2 minutes
- Director
- James Mangold
The tone of Indiana Jones shifted slightly with its most recent installment, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which introduced Indy's (Harrison Ford) goddaughter Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge.) The Dial of Destiny saw Indy retire, which has left the Indiana Jones series open to either never return, or to come back in a brand-new way. It's worth noting that Indiana Jones did once have a The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, which only lasted two seasons before its cancelation in 1993.

Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny Ending Explained: Is It The Last Movie?
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny ends on a satisfying note for the beloved archaeologist. We break down the film's ending and what's next.
A television show following Helena after the events of the fifth movie could see the franchise taken over by a new character, with a female-led focus. It could also allow for a new series of archaeological adventures, and with Ke Huy Quan's return to acting, hopefully, the reprisal of his character from The Temple of Doom. With Waller-Bridge's backlog of writing credits for incredible dramas such as Killing Eve, and the hopes that she would write the story alongside starring, could completely redefine Indiana Jones for a new generation.
6 The Blade Runner Franchise
A Prequel About The Uprising Of The Replicants
The Blade Runner TV shows and movies helped define a new era of sci-fi, although there is still a lot of backstory that could still be provided. The release of Blade Runner: Black Lotus in 2021, an animated spin-off, introduced a new replicant in search of her memories, and is set after the events of Blade Runner: Black Out 2022. Blade Runner has yet to properly address the replicant rebellion that motivated it in the first place.
However, a television series focusing on the events leading to replicants becoming illegal on Earth could help expand the world-building that was so carefully done in Blade Runner and Blade Runner: 2049. While there is already a TV sequel to this franchise with the Blade Runner: 2099, there is still room for another show to focus on as a prequel instead. With Blade Runner having such a complex universe, there is the opportunity for all manner of spinoffs, especially prequels to the first film.
5 The Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End)
No Luck Making Those Sequels Then? It's Just The One Sequel, Actually
The Cornetto Trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End) introduced three wacky stories set in seemingly boring parts of England, only for its residents to be thrown into action-packed, insane situations revolving around the likes of zombies and a murderous community . Although each of these films focuses on the characters of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, there are plenty of smaller characters whose recounts of the events are worth hearing.
The Cornetto Trilogy could be a great basis to revive the series in an anthology format, with each episode telling the story of a character's life after the events of the film. For example, Hot Fuzz could see the return of Peter Ian Staker, (Stephen Merchant,) who lost his swan, or Shaun of the Dead could see the reaction of a regular of the Winchester pub, heartbroken at the state their local has been left in after a zombie apocalypse. Considering how unique each of the films in the Cornetto Trilogy is, it would be great to see more from the minds of Pegg and Frost.
4 The Goonies
The Inferno's Swashbuckling Future, Or Past
The Goonies
Cast
- Jeff Cohen
- Corey Feldman
- Ke Huy Quan
- Release Date
- June 7, 1985
- Runtime
- 114 minutes
- Director
- Richard Donner
The hit 80s film The Goonies has had several rumored sequels and follow-ups over the years, although none ever came to fruition. While the original film is considered a cult classic, one glaringly obvious detail that was missed was what happened to the Inferno after the credits rolled. Its final scenes saw the pirate ship break free of the grotto and sail away, which provides a great setup for a sequel to The Goonies. As the Inferno had no crew, or at least not one that was seen, a spin-off to The Goonies could see what happened to the ship next.
3 Finding Nemo
What Happens When The Swimming Stops?
Finding Nemo saw a lot of success with its sequel, Finding Dory, which saw the blue fish in a search for her parents. However, there are other stories from the original that didn't see expansion in its sequel. At the end of Finding Nemo, the collection of various fish from the dentist's fish tank make their escape to the ocean, and are last seen bobbing in plastic bags on the surface. Surprisingly, Disney has never spent more time on these characters, and their lives in the ocean after never having been out of a tank, could allow for plenty of hilarious storylines for children and adults alike. Additionally, Pixar's Win or Lose series means the studio is interested in exploring the TV format.
2 Dodgeball
A New Generation Of Players
Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story
Cast
- Vince Vaughn
- Rip Torn
- Release Date
- June 18, 2004
- Runtime
- 92 minutes
The hilarious Dodgeball had a star-studded cast, including the likes of Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, but has yet to see a sniff of a revival. Despite being a standalone film, there is a lot of potential for Dodgeball in a television series, either as a prequel or a sequel. Although it's unlikely a return will be made due to the success of the cast, a sequel could focus on Peter Le Fluer running the Globo Gym.
Despite winning the tournament and becoming rich, the character was notably bad with finances, which led to the events of Dodgeball in the first place. It could be interesting to see how he manages to run a successful business after saving Average Joe's, although there may be more interest in seeing a prequel, and how Le Fluer ended up being so bad with money in the first place.
1 Kill Bill: Volume 2
Bill's Successor Could Redefine The Saga
Revisiting such an iconic series of movies would be very risky, but with the right creative vision, it could work. The final scenes of Kill Bill: Volume 2 saw the character finally reunited with her child, and despite years of flip-flopping over Kill Bill: Volume 3 and Volume 4, Quentin Tarantino announced his retirement plans in 2023 ahead of his final movie. Seeing as it has been close to two decades since the release of Kill Bill: Volume 2, the story might gain a new wave of success in the television format, perhaps focusing on the person the Bride's daughter became after being raised by an assassin.
