One of the biggest twists in the new Amazon series Mr. & Mrs. Smith is the instant death of one of its biggest celebrity actors. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a highly original reimagining of the 2005 action comedy classic starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. In true Donald Glover (Atlanta, Swarm) style, Mr. & Mrs. Smith shifts the focus of the original film to explore the complexities and depths of real-life martial issues. The ambitious series subverts traditional action drama tropes by highlighting the subtle realities of married life, covering everything from couples therapy to farting in front of your partner.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith has a star-studded cast, lead by Glover and Maya Erskine (PEN15) as John and Jane Smith. The series follows the origins of their arranged marriage as both characters decide to leave their former lives behind in order to live a luxurious, and extremely high-risk, life of luxury. Erskine's Jane was a top candidate for the CIA but was ultimately rejected due to an unconvincing psychiatric evaluation. Glover's John, on the other hand, was discharged from the Marines for complications with asthma and anxiety. Mr. & Mrs. Smith also introduces several other interesting agents and targets over the course of the series.

Mr & Mrs Smith's Opening Scene Pulls A Legendary Scream Move With Alexander Skarsgard's Spy

One of the biggest names attached to Amazon's Mr. & Mrs. Smith is Alexander Skarsgård (Succession, The Northman), but fans who were hoping to see the acclaimed actor throughout the series will be disappointed. The actor's character, who is later revealed to be another John Smith, dies within the series' opening teaser scene along with another notable actress and marketing pull, Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver, Hobbs & Shaw). This trick is reminiscent of the Drew Berrymore twist in Scream (1996), in which her character dies within the first few minutes.

Both Skarsgård and Gonzalez were some of the biggest top-billed stars in Amazon's Mr. & Mrs. Smith adaptation despite hardly being used in the series at all. All of the other guest stars in the series, including John Turturro, Ron Pearlman, Paul Dano, Wagner Moura, and Parker Posey, were at least featured in one or two episodes and had their characters developed more than Skarsgård and Gonzalez. It's interesting, especially in Skarsgård's case, that the series wouldn't utilize him outside of a brief onscreen cameo.

Alexander Skarsgard's John Smith Could Still Return In Mr. & Mrs. Smith's Future

There is still some hope that Skarsgård's deceased character could return in future installments of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, especially if there is enough demand for it. While Glover and Erskine have great chemistry, Skargård and Gonzalez also seem like an entertaining pair in the series. Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 2 could incorporate flashbacks, even in the form of images to show previous Johns & Janes that were compromised by Moura and Posey's super high-risk partnership. There's still very little explanation revealed about the "Hihi company" that hires all of them, so Mr. & Mrs. Smith could eventually bring back the eliminated Smiths to look at the company's overall history.
