Warning: Spoilers for Ms. Marvel episode 2
As it turns out, the mother of Kamala’s love interest in Ms. Marvel is somehow connected to her superhero journey. Shortly after making casual conversation with Kamala and discussing his mother, Kamran burst onto the scene in a surprising way when Kamala was trying to escape Damage Control agents. When Kamran introduced his mother, Namja, at the end of Ms. Marvel episode 2, it became apparent that both have some sort of interest in Kamala’s mysterious bangle.
So far, Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan understands very little about the bangle that imbues her with the ability to create hard light constructs. What she does know, though, is that it was once worn by Aisha, her great-grandmother and a person accused of bringing “shame” to Kamala’s family. Now that Kamala has it, she’s found herself in the crosshairs of Damage Control, who have become aware of her new cosmic powers. Her situation received yet another complication when Nimra Bucha’s Namja was revealed to be the woman she’s been seeing in her visions. For now, it remains to be seen if the MCU’s Ms. Marvel should count Namja and Kamran as allies or enemies.
In Marvel Comics, Kamran’s mother isn’t anyone of import, nor does she have any real role in Kamala Khan’s story. It’s possible that for her character, the MCU is drawing inspiration from an MCU villain called Lineage. In the comics, Kamran – who was an Inhuman like Kamala – gained her trust and then betrayed her by handing her off to Lineage. Any version of this story would of course have to be loose interpretation, especially since Marvel appears to be writing the Inhumans out of Kamala’s origin. So while Kamran’s mother is unlikely to be an Inhuman, she could very well be a villain with evil designs on Kamala’s bangle. If so, she may be the MCU’s Star, a powerful Captain Marvel villain. “Namja” means “Star”, so it may be that her name is a hint at her identity.
Another possibility is that Kamran’s mother is actually Aisha. She’s obviously the wrong age to be Kamala’s great-grandmother, thus making that scenario a bit unlikely, but not impossible. After all, Aisha wouldn’t be the first MCU character to go decades without aging. It may be that after vanishing from her family’s lives, she started anew somewhere else and is now looking to reclaim her bangle. If Namja is Aisha (or simply another previous owner of the bangle) she could be a version of Quasar. In the comics, Quasar is a mantle held by multiple superheroes who have wielded the Quantum Bands, which seems to be what Ms. Marvel’s bangle is in the MCU.
Either way, Kamran’s mother – whoever she has – is poised to make a big impact on Kamala’s MCU story. Clearly, it was in her interest to get Kamala away from Damage Control in Ms. Marvel episode 2, but exactly what she expects to get out of her efforts has yet to be determined. But even if she is a villain, her role in the series could provide some much-needed answers. Namja could help shed light on what the bangle actually is and where it comes from.
