Warning: Spoilers for Ms. Marvel episode 6

Ms. Marvel’s shocking post-credits scene provides answers to five major MCU mysteries relevant to Phase 4’s story. Despite its heavy use of Marvel references, Kamala Khan’s six-episode journey has had the feel of a standalone MCU story. But in the aftermath of her final battle with Damage Control, Ms. Marvel laid the groundwork for some exciting developments in the MCU’s future.

Kamala Khan’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe saw the character come to with her new abilities and face off against her very first MCU villains. And of course, it was known from the start of the series that the challenges she would endure in Ms. Marvel would only be the beginning. Regardless of The Marvels, the Phase 4 team-up movie will see Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala forces against an unknown enemy.

As many expected, Ms. Marvel episode 6 concluded with a tease of Kamala’s adventure with Carol in The Marvels. Through a surprise cameo from Brie Larson, the season finale’s post-credits scene showed Kamala experiencing an odd sensation from the bangle before seemingly transforming into a fully suited-up Captain Marvel who proceeded to stare at her new surroundings. What transpired in this scene resulted in instant confusion from viewers, but it actually clears up five MCU mysteries.

Why Kamala Khan Is In The Marvels

Ms Marvel Carol Danvers Captain Marvel

The pages of the original Captain Marvel comic shed light on what just happened to Kamala and how she fits into the MCU’s plans for The Marvels. It seems that Kamala is getting a version of Rick Jones’ comic story. Best known as the teenager Bruce Banner saved from the explosion of gamma radiation that changed him into the Hulk, Rick was a sidekick to three Marvel superheroes. In addition to traveling alongside the Hulk and Captain America, Rick Jones was forced into an unwelcome situation where he and the original Captain Marvel had to share the same physical space. When Mar-Vell was trapped in a dimension known as the Negative Zone, the two became bound to each other by Mar-Vell’s Nega-Bands, which were bracelets that enhanced his abilities.

Whenever Rick banged the Nega-Bands together, Mar-Vell would warp into Rick’s place, thus sending the teenager to the Negative Zone where he would often have to fend for his life until Mar-Vell was able to swap places with him again. This became the new normal for the two characters for several years and set in motion several of Mar-Vell’s biggest stories. Based on the similarities between what went in Mar-Vell’s comics and Ms. Marvel’s post-credits scene, this appears to be the explanation for Kamala turning into Carol. Finding a way for both characters to leave the Negative Zone may be their shared goal in The Marvels.

What Ms. Marvel’s Bracelet Really Is

The connection to Rick Jones and Mar-Vell indicates that the bangle worn by Kamala in Ms. Marvel is one of the Nega-Bands. In the comic books, the Nega-Bands were weapons created by the Kree. Back when Mar-Vell was still considered their champion, the Supreme Intelligence gave him the Nega-Bands in order to make him more powerful. With them, he possessed enhanced strength, the ability to project powerful energy blasts from his hands, and several other new powers. By giving Kamala the Nega-Bands, Marvel has found a way to link her directly to Carol Danvers’ overarching story and the Captain Marvel mythos in the comic books.

The Blue Arm In Ms. Marvel Episode 3

Ms Marvel Blue Skin

Flashbacks to when Namja and Aisha found the bangle revealed that it was found on the blue arm of an unidentified character. Considering how many blue alien races there are in the MCU, it was hard to say at the time exactly what the show was teasing. This being the true look of a Djinn made sense, but after the Ms. Marvel post-credits scene, the bracelets belonging to a member of the Kree is a much more plausible scenario. As noted above, the Nega-Bands were invented by the Kree Empire in Marvel Comics. Based on that specific detail, it’s now easy to connect the dots between the MCU’s Nega-Bands and the blue arm to the Kree.

Where Kamala Khan Is Now (& Where Captain Marvel Has Been)

Captain Marvel cares about one MCU hero more than anyone.

Unless Marvel is making some massive changes to how the Nega-Bands work, it’s likely that Kamala has unwittingly become a prisoner of the Negative Zone, a mysterious dimension discovered by the Fantastic Four in the 1960s. The Negative Zone is a vast and mostly empty realm made up of anti-matter. Just as Rick and Mar-Vell were forced to languish there interchangeably in Marvel Comics, Carol and Kamala are apparently dealing with the same predicament in Phase 4.

Not only does the Negative Zone explain what happened to Ms. Marvel, but it also answers some important questions about what Carol has been up to lately. Kamala speculated at the beginning of the series that Carol may be taking a break, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. If Ms. Marvel is in the Negative Zone while Carol is in her bedroom, that would in turn mean that Captain Marvel has been trapped in the Negative Zone up until that moment. In the comics, Rick and Mar-Vell had to share the same physical space because they had matching pairs of Nega-Bands bound by a connection that transcended universal barriers. With that in mind, it looks like Carol has her own Nega-Band that’s supposed to be paired with Kamala’s.

Who Is The Marvels' Villain?

Annihilus opens his mouth as fire rages behind him in Marvel Comics.

Ms. Marvel’s post-credits scene paints a clearer picture of what Avengers 5’s villain, but with Ms. Marvel setting up the Negative Zone, Annihilus now has a very good chance of showing up in The Marvels instead.
