Having been produced for Disney+, Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, even as the Disney+ TV show was greenlit, Marvel canceled another in development and one of their most popular characters with it
Ordered as a pilot, New Warriors originally featured actress Milana Vayntrub cast as Squirrel Girl (also known as Doreen Green). Known for her bizarre ability to talk to squirrels and her offbeat sense of humor, since Squirrel Girl’s first appearance in the comics in 1991, the character has developed a cult following from readers. However, despite a well-reviewed screening, according to show lead Kevin Biegel, New Warriors was canceled for being “too gay” and denied Marvel’s rodent-themed superhero her MCU debut.
Although Squirrel Girl has yet to appear onscreen in the MCU, she has appeared alongside Kamala as her crime-fighting co-star in the animated series Marvel unceremoniously canceled New Warriors.
In one of Kamala Khan’s first animated appearances, Marvel Rising began the series with Squirrel Girl and Ms. Marvel as a vigilante duo that lasted through the long-running franchise. Kamala herself described Doreen as her best partner, citing their teamwork and status as “BFHF” (“Best Friend Heroes Forever”). There’s a precedent for a team-up and justification for Squirrel Girl to appear as a ing character in Ms. Marvel. Additionally, Squirrel Girl was a vital part of Kamala’s television legacy and helped to popularize her. So not only would Squirrel Girl’s inclusion make sense, it’d be fitting for Ms. Marvel to give her a live-action introduction the same way Marvel Rising gave Kamala her animated one.
By introducing the character in future episodes of Ms. Marvel, not only can Marvel redeem all the lost potential of Squirrel Girl in the MCU, but she can also help build upon the themes and characters already teased by Disney+. On Marvel Rising, Kamala and Doreen explored themes of friendship and bullying as well as encouraged viewers to embrace what made them delightfully nerdy. Both Marvel Rising’s and New Warrior’s arcs of its heroes trying to be taken seriously, and trying to fit in among a world that sees them as weird, are ideal for the high school setting established by Ms. Marvel.
Squirrel Girl has had difficulties finding her way into the MCU, but her fight for live-action representation doesn’t have to end with New Warriors' premature denial. Ms. Marvel is a perfect fit for Marvel’s oddball hero and could salvage what was lost when Squirrel Girl’s New Warriors debut failed to make it to air. After all, it helps to have a “BFHF” who has one's back when things get nuts.
