two Avengers movies in 2025. Marvel’s plans for the Multiverse Saga are actually quite similar to the Infinity Saga, at least in of what everything leads to, meaning that comparisons between The Kang Dynasty/Secret Wars and Infinity War/Endgame will be difficult to avoid.
After Endgame had the biggest opening weekend in history and went on to become the second highest-grossing movie of all time, it was difficult to picture how Marvel could top its own success for the following MCU phases. That said, there were plenty of Marvel comic book arcs that could serve as the source material for cinematic events even bigger than Endgame, with Secret Wars being the best example. As soon as Kang and Secret Wars are part of the same MCU story and that it all leads to Avengers 5 and 6.
Despite the lack of Avengers movies in Phases 4 and 5, Marvel’s Multiverse Saga will be concluded in a very similar way to the Infinity Saga – a two-part Avengers story. Considering how well that strategy worked for Infinity War and Endgame, it is no surprise that Marvel is once again going for an epic-scale two-part Avengers story, with the prospect of Secret Wars being even bigger than Endgame. That said, there is a risk that The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars come off as Infinity War and Endgame rehashes, especially if they use the same trick the Thanos movies did. That is, if The Kang Dynasty, like Infinity War, ends with the heroes being defeated; and if Secret Wars, like Endgame, sees the heroes beating the odds and winning it all through some multiverse or time travel plotline.
Infinity War’s Thanos Snap Cliffhanger Made Endgame A Must-See
While Endgame’s box office is far more impressive than Infinity War’s, the latter’s ending is the main reason why the former did so well, even more so in of opening weekend. Infinity War ended with Thanos winning, a shocking plot twist that saw a half of the entire universe, including several Avengers, being erased. While audiences could anticipate that the snapped Avengers would return, the real question was how that would happen. In addition, it was clear Endgame would see the death of some Avengers, which created a sense of urgency and made audiences eager to see the movie as soon as they could.
Thanos had been able to outsmart and defeat most of the Avengers in Infinity War, which also had to do with the Avengers being split after Civil War. How the few remaining Avengers would defeat Thanos was also a huge question leading up to Endgame, and the prospect of a time travel plot that could reverse things made the movie sound much more interesting. In a way, Infinity War was the only marketing campaign Endgame needed.
The Kang Dynasty & Secret Wars Are Already Similar To Infinity War & Endgame
A two-part Avengers story with the second installment releasing close to the first one is exactly the strategy Marvel used for Infinity War and Endgame. Not only that but The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars are serving as a conclusion to the entire Multiverse Saga, similar to how Infinity War and Endgame concluded the Infinity Saga. Kang can be considered the MCU’s next Thanos, as he has been teased since Loki and will eventually clash with the Avengers. In addition, the Secret Wars title evokes the idea of a massive final battle, just like the one Endgame had, only on a much bigger scale. The fact that The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars will obviously deal with the multiverse, which in the MCU can be confused with time travel, also makes the next two Avengers movies quite similar to Endgame – in which Ant-Man’s time-travel technology was an important plot device.
The Multiverse Saga Can’t Just Repeat Infinity War & Endgame
As promising as it is to see an “Avengers lose against Kang in The Kang Dynasty and then fix everything in Secret Wars through the multiverse, as that trick has already been done perfectly by Infinity War and Endgame.
How The Kang Dynasty Can Lead To Secret Wars (Without Copying Infinity War)
One interesting way for The Kang Dynasty to flip what was done in Infinity War is to have the Avengers win against a version of Kang, only to realize that they allowed for a much bigger problem to happen. Defeating a version of Kang could set up an Incursion, similar to the one that Earth-838 risked while trying to defeat Thanos, leading right into the MCU’s version of Secret Wars. There are several versions of Kang, and another, much more powerful and dangerous, could rise following the events of The Kang Dynasty. Another interesting possibility is to have another Marvel villain, most likely Doctor Doom, take on the role of the main antagonist after the Avengers succeed against Kang in The Kang Dynasty.
In the comics, Kang is not the main character in either version of Secret Wars. The fact that the MCU is placing Kang The Conqueror as the main villain in a movie that leads right into its version of Secret Wars makes the next two Avengers films more difficult to predict. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars can replicate the exciting atmosphere of Infinity War and Endgame, but they should not try to be just a reimagined version of the last two Avengers films.
