Starting at the end of January 2021, Brendan Fraser’s iconic films, team must again embark on a mission to save the world when Imhotep is resurrected once again in the sequel The Mummy Returns.
Although critical reception towards these movies is mixed, The Mummy fan base is large and dedicated to the mummy fighting team’s perilous adventures. But the HBO Max platform already has an impressive collection of films - and it's soon adding more. Recently, Warner Bros. made the monumental decision to release their 2021 theatrical calendar to HBO Max the same day as theaters with no extra charge. Though these 2021 releases, including films like The Suicide Squad and Dune, ing HBO Max’s catalog only further strengthens the appeal of the service, having a well-stocked library full of old favorites is just as important to retaining subscribers.
Warner Media announced their January 2021 HBO Max releases would include The Mummy and The Mummy Returns on Jan. 30. The Mummy spinoff, The Scorpion King, will also be added on Jan. 30. In addition to these films, HBO Max will also have all six seasons of Gossip Girl on Jan. 1 in preparation for their reboot of the show coming out next year. Other iconic classics that will soon be available on HBO Max include the Ocean’s trilogy and Ocean’s 8, The Notebook, and Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Vol 1 & 2, Pulp Fiction, and Reservoir Dogs.
With Warner Bros. adding their 2021 lineup to HBO Max, The Mummy universe’s fans will find the subscription to the platform worth the price. By being added to HBO Max, Fraser and friends can once again find their cult audience and maybe even acquire some new fans along the way. Although WarnerMedia has only announced the release of the first two Mummy films and its spinoff in January, the 1959 iteration of The Mummy was previously on HBO Max, for those wanting to check out an earlier take on the classic movie monster.
As more and more streaming services are popping up on the market, the competition to have the most appealing library will continue to intensify. With theaters most likely being unsafe for audiences until a year after the vaccine, catering to The Mummy’s massive following is a substantial investment for HBO Max. However, if other more affordable streamers were to acquire The Mummy universe for their library, HBO Max could lose these fans - that is, of course, if those subscribers haven't found other reasons to stay on the service. Regardless, for dedicated fans to a particular universe like The Mummy, the competition between streamers is in the buyers’ favor.
