My Hero Academia: Vigilantes has just introduced another major character to the series, this time a woman with some clear parallels to Superman's Lois Lane. This girl, however, has some special powers of her own to help back up her snooping.

In My Hero Academia's world, the overwhelming majority of people have some kind of superpower, although they're not always useful ones. Some are well-suited for hero work, while others have more niche applications, and that happens to be the case for Vigilantes' new character, Makoto Tsukauchi. In possession of the "Polygraph" Quirk, Makoto can tell whether someone is lying so long as she's in physical with them when they answer her questions. That makes Makoto a difficult person to be around when trying to conceal a secret like a vigilante identity.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes' Take on Lois Lane is Perfect

Makoto Possesses Many of Lois's Greatest Traits

Makoto is introduced in episode 7 of Vigilantes as a fellow college student, albeit one who's a few years older than Koichi. She quickly endears herself to Koichi with flirting and flattering, getting him to bring her to his "penthouse" in Naruhata. Makoto makes it clear that she's an expert on hero studies by helping Koichi with his homework, revealing the origins of heroes and how vigilantism led to the ed hero system used in Japan and around the world. Amusingly, heroes in My Hero Academia's world can be traced back to vigilantes in, of all places, Rhode Island.

Makoto has befriended Koichi in an attempt to get close to the Naruhata Vigilantes, already suspicious that he might be one of them. That makes her quite similar to Lois Lane, who (especially in early comics) often spent a lot of time trying to deduce Superman's secret identity. Makoto also looks suspiciously like classic depictions of Lois, with long dark hair, a knowing smile, and uniquely colored eyes (although Makoto's are due to lenses). Later in the story, Makoto ends up getting close to Captain Celebrity, a hero from the US who is quite similar to Superman.

Makoto Will Be Sticking Around for the Future

Makoto is a Major Character in Vigilantes

Naomasa Tsukauchi with his sister, Makoto.

Makoto's introduction is a significant point in Vigilantes, as she will remain a very important character in the story moving forward. It's also worth noting that Makoto is, in fact, the sister of Detective Naomasa Tsukauchi, All Might's top confidante, who appears in both Vigilantes and in the main My Hero Academia series. Makoto tries to leverage her brother's relationship with All Might to arrange an interview with him, but he's reluctant to use his friendship with All Might in such a way. Interestingly, while Makoto has a Quirk, Naomasa doesn't appear to have one at all.

It's certainly interesting to have a character trying to get at the protagonist's secret identity, especially since so few heroes in My Hero Academia's universe actually have secret identities in the first place. Makoto nearly gets Koichi with her Quirk even in this first episode, but because she mispronounces "The Crawler" as "The Cruller", Koichi is able to answer honestly: he's definitely not "the Cruller," after all. Makoto's relationship with Koichi is also proving to be a sore spot for Pop Step, who seems to be quite jealous of the amount of attention she's getting.

It will be fascinating to see how Makoto's character continues to develop over the course of the story, and how she will differentiate herself from her inspiration, Lois Lane. Regardless of how they might feel about her, though, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes fans can expect to see a lot more of her in the rest of the series.
