Though fans of Naruto know that the title character and Sasuke are god-tier, they might not realize how far that goes. When a fan says that a character from any franchise is "god-tier", they usually mean that the character is incredibly powerful and near invincible. This is the case with Naruto and Sasuke, the strongest characters in the Naruto franchise. However, calling them god-tier refers to a few other aspects of their characters that go beyond how powerful they are.
Naruto and Sasuke are well known for their godlike abilities, but the other thing that makes them walking deities are the inspirations behind them. Like many other elements of the ninja world, Naruto and Sasuke are based on mythology. Naruto has them represent Indra and Ashura, races of beings from Hindu mythology. This reveal has a huge impact on the plot, but these aren't the only mythological beings they are based on. The others are lot more subtle but play a large role in Shinto pantheon.
Sasuke and Naruto share many of the same elements of Raijin and Fuujin, the Japanese gods of thunder and lightning, and wind, respectively. The two gods are responsible for causing the constant barrage of storms faced by Japan, but also protecting the island nation. Their most straightforward connection to the shinobi is Naruto's and Sasuke's signature jutsu. Sasuke uses the lightning-based Chidori, and Naruto uses the wind-based Rasengan. The other connections are found in their designs, some of which are the Naruto and Sasuke repelled the alien Kaguya. The clearest proof though comes from one opening.
There doesn't seem to be a lot of fan discussion surrounding the ninja's godly connection, but the Naruto: Shippuden (which means hurricane) anime has acknowledged it. In the series' 32nd ending theme, Spinning World by Diana Garnet, Naruto and Sasuke stand off with each other in front of a shoji door depicting Fuujin and Raijin doing the same exact thing.
While Naruto and Sasuke are canonically inspired by Indra and Ashura, there's no doubt that Raijin and Fuujin played a huge role in their character creations as well. Naruto's ace ninja are definitely god-tier in more ways than one.
