After six incredible seasons, fun WWDITS cameos and major revelations, one of the biggest surprises revolved around the character Nadja, played by Natasia Demetriou — and it wasn't related to the plot.

Demetriou's Nadja, the fiery and fiercely independent centuries-old vampire, was one of WWDITS's best characters. From her razor-sharp wit and knack for delivering biting insults to her bizarre relationship with her doll, Nadja was an unforgettable mix of humor and menace. She could switch seamlessly from pining after her past lovers to unleashing her terrifying vampiric side, all within a single 20-minute episode. However, when season 6 premiered, fans immediately noticed something different about Natasia Demetriou's appearance.

What We Do In The Shadows Hid Natasia Demetriou's Pregnancy Bump With Various Props

While The Actress Was Pregnant In Real Life, Nadja Wasn't Pregnant On The Show

From the opening episode of season 6, it became fairly obvious that Natasia Demetriou was pregnant, and the show was employing creative ways to conceal her baby bump. Nadja — who isn't pregnant —spends much of the premiere sitting down, often with a pillow or a book on her lap. There are also very few wide shots of Demetriou, with most of her scenes framed from the chest up. But the scene that really tips off her pregnancy is when the group visits Guillermo in his new shed home, where Nadja spends much of the scene holding Guillermo's bucket.

Why aren't there more mockumentary movies?

Although there are some mockumentary movies, you typically see more TV shows in the faux documentary format instead. Although it makes sense, I wish there were more films that used this format. Titles like What We Do in the Shadows and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping are ridiculous, but they're feel-good and hilarious, too.

Before the season premiere, Demetriou discussed her pregnancy and the strategies used to hide it in an interview with Vulture. She joked that she had to learn every trick to hide her belly, saying, “Carry a bucket, carry a box, put a pillow on your lap, stand behind a fruit bowl.” While Nadja's appearance noticeably changed throughout the season, the show never directly addressed it. Fortunately, her storyline for the season gave her the perfect excuse to hide her bump.

Her signature wardrobe — large elaborate Victorian outfits featuring long jackets and dramatic capes — was ideal for concealing her pregnancy.

In one of the season's funniest subplots, Guillermo gets a job at a finance company called Cannon Capital. Nadja soon becomes the company's receptionist to keep an eye on Guillermo. This setup allowed her to spend most of her scenes seated behind a desk making hilarious phone calls. The show's mockumentary format also worked in her favor, since so many of Nadja's scenes consist of talking-head interviews with the camera crew. Additionally, her signature wardrobe — large elaborate Victorian outfits featuring long jackets and dramatic capes — was ideal for concealing her pregnancy.

The Actress Has Kept A Low Profile Since The End Of The Vampire Series

In October 2024, the Los Angeles Times confirmed that Natasia Demetriou had given birth to her first child, and that's why she didn't appear with her WWDITS castmates at New York Comic Con. The actress currently has no announced projects, likely due to her desire to spend time with her newborn. In 2024, she voiced the character Malice on Max's Kite Man: Hell Yeah, which has not yet been renewed for a second season. However, after delivering such an iconic and brilliant performance on What We Do On The Shadows, Demetriou will likely be in high demand moving forward.
