Despite the critical acclaim and warm reception, Netflix has officially canceled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off according to series creator Bryan Lee O'Malley. In a post on O'Malley's X , the beloved comic creator thanked everyone involved in production of the anime series and clarified that he and the rest of the crew on the Scott Pilgrim anime had always planned the series for one season, so the non-renewal isn't a shock.

Though Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was received well by fans and critics alike, O'Malley clarifies that even putting season one together required a few favors to be called in. Given the series' cast of A-List actors, it's easy to see why Netflix would cancel the series if for no other reason than the many scheduling conflicts that came with assembling a team of some of Hollywood's most talented actors.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Was A Genuine Miracle

Assembling Such A Talented Cast & Crew Was A Herculean Effort

It's been one year since Scott Pilgrim Takes Off came out. It was an honor to work with all of the cast & staff around the world. It was like conducting a symphony orchestra every day. From the moment @bdgrabinski sparked the idea, the project felt like a one of a kind miracle.

Anyway, we were recently informed that the show will NOT return. As you know, we only intended one season, and called in a lot of favors to make it happen, so making more would have been nearly impossible. Still, I know some of you have been holding out hope. 😩🫶🏼

Sorry to all matthew fans and gideon fans, i know you will suffer the most

Few anime series in recent memory have been as big of a talent nexus as Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. In addition to the cast of Scott Pilgrim's movie returning for the anime, the series also combined the talents of Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley, chiptune musicians Anamanaguchi, and the anime juggernaut Science Saru. With this all-star team, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was a wildly inventive reinterpretation of the original comic series.

The miraculous nature of the anime is not lost on O'Malley, as he reflects in his Post that co-showrunning the series alongside BenDavid Grabinski was like "conducting a symphony orchestra every day." Despite the talent behind the series though, its cancelation is far from a surprise. O'Malley sympathizes with fans but clarifies that "Making more would have been nearly impossible." Even Scott Pilgrim Takes Off's cast knew a second season was a tall order (one they were excited to tackle).

Despite Scott Pilgrim Takes Off's Cancelation, Netflix Is Still A Great Platform For Anime

The Streaming Service Hosts Many Critically Acclaimed & Beloved Anime

Though Scott Pilgrim Takes Off's cancelation is sure to disappoint fans, the streaming giant is still host to a solid library. It's no exaggeration to say that anime saved Netflix in 2023, and their anime offerings have only grown more impressive in 2024. Fans looking for wild and varied animation with a romantic twist from Science Saru have Fall 2024 critical darling Dandadan to watch week to week, while those craving something much darker from the studio might want to try Devilman Crybaby.
