After years of attempts to bring Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's Netflix was finally able to take the property past the pilot stage. Locke & Key follows the Locke family as they relocate to the Key House and attempt to restart their lives as they get sucked into a mystery that dates back to their late father's youthful days in that same house.
Given the binge-worthy nature of the show, it's likely fans finished the fast-paced series quickly and are now looking for something new to watch. We've grabbed a few other Netflix Originals that fans of Locke & Key might enjoy after finishing the first season.
Updated April 10th, 2020 by Scoot Allan: With the recent announcement that Locke & Key has been picked up for a second season on Netflix, we wanted to take another look at a few more series to watch on Netflix to hold fans over until the Locke family returns to Key House.
THE ORDER
The Order is a Netflix Original Series that follows a standard supernatural theme as young Jack Morton enrolls in a magical secret society with revenge-fueled ulterior motives, though the series quickly separates itself from the pack with surprising hilarity.
The battle between witches and werewolves gets a dose of college humor that works surprisingly well while staying in dramatic territory. A second season of the series is also on the way, so there isn't a better time to binge the first season now to get ready for the return to The Order.
THE STRANGER
While not as family-friendly as Locke & Key, the recent release of The Stranger, an adaptation of the Harlan Coben novel, also features a family dealing with the secrets of the past in a tense and thrilling roller coaster of deception.
Richard Armitage plays a family man whose whole world is thrown in doubt when a mysterious stranger (Hannah John-Kamen) reveals secrets about his family that kicks off a series of falling dominoes as more and more people get caught up in the Stranger's wake.
MORTEL
The French supernatural series Mortel is a short but enjoyable watch that follows two friends who make a dark deal with a voodoo spirit to gain powers so they can investigate the murder of their friend, though they find help with a young voodoo practitioner to take on the spirit.
The series is an odd but fun mix of teen drama and supernatural fantasy that stands on its own in an otherwise-packed genre. It's also a fairly quick binge with a six-episode first season, though we're still waiting to hear word on a second season
THE SOCIETY
The first season of Netflix's The Society introduced a high school class returning from a field trip to an empty town, which they soon find is cut off from the outside world by a thick impenetrable forest.
The teens are forced to not only grow up quickly and function as a society to survive, but also investigate the mysterious circumstances and odd occurrences in the quiet town they are trapped in. A second season is slated to debut on Netflix sometime in 2020.
THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE
Mike Flanagan's loose adaptation of Shirley Jackson's classic novel The Haunting of Hill House wowed audiences with a time-spanning tale featuring a fantastic cast and a ghost-infested mansion that explores a family struggling to deal with the haunting effect of growing up in the house that continues to threaten the family years after leaving their former home.
The sequel season The Haunting of Bly Manor won't likely serve as a direct continuation, but the first season is definitely not to be missed and will have you on the edge of your seat along with the Crain family.
CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA
Locke & Key has been criticized by some and applauded by others for the series' choice to lighten up some of the darker elements of the comic series, but for those looking to explore the balance between light and dark, you might want to check out the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Set in the same real-world vein as The CW's Riverdale, Sabrina follows a young half-witch as she deals with the antiquated beliefs of her satanic religion and the growing pressures of high school all while trying to figure out her place in the dark prophecies of Hell.
LOST IN SPACE
While the Key House and its magical keys might be one of the main draws of Locke & Key, the strength of the story comes from watching this family deal with the loss of their father and the fallout of a traumatic accident that might not have been an accident.
Netflix's Lost in Space series equally focuses on a family struggling to hold itself together after the loss of their home planet as the Robinsons get, well, lost in space. The new Lost in Space takes the classic property into the future and updates the sci-fi elements while diving into the dynamics that make a family work, especially under pressure.
OCTOBER FACTION
Netflix has been adapting a few different comic books that share some similarities with Locke & Key, including the recently released October Fashion, which is based on the comic of the same name from Steve Niles and Damien Worm.
October Faction follows the Allens, a husband and wife team of supernatural monster hunters who return to their home town \ with their teenage twins, though they have to hide their monster-hunting occupation from their neighbors. As the town is riddled with supernatural monsters, problems ensue and the family learns that the best way to stay together is to slay together.
SHADOWHUNTERS
As we previously mentioned, Locke & Key didn't quite work the first time it was attempted, which resulted in the pilot not being picked up and the series living in developmental limbo for a while. Shadowhunters.
While there's a bit more teen than drama in this teen drama and a little less real-world grounding, Shadowhunters follows young Clary Fray as she learns she comes from a long line of human/angel hybrids who are tasked with hunting demons and other macabre monsters of the night.
DARK
Dark, which begins with a child's disappearance in a small town that kicks off a multi-generational tale full of secrets and mysteries that are all brought together by a mysterious wormhole located in the caves underneath the town.
The families involved begin to realize the implications of the cave's magic as it winds across the years in a twisted time-travel tale that explores the secrets we keep from ourselves and the people we love most in our life.
