Netflix's latest Top 10 masterpiece is Space Force. The 10-episode series revolves around the US military creating a sixth branch of defense called Space Force. Carell's character, General Naird, is a dry, to-the-point kind of guy who's trying to get the branch off the ground while taking care of his family.
After becoming First General of Space Force, viewers find out Maggie Naird, General Naird's wife, has been incarcerated for 40 years, but it's never revealed why. With the hopes of season 2 being greenlit, Space Force fans have come together with possible theories as to why Maggie is locked up. Are all of these theories plausible, though? Keep reading to find out.
Makes Sense: Maggie Sabotaged A Launch On Purpose
When General Naird found out his family would be stationed to a base in the middle of Colorado, Maggie is seeing crying beside him in bed. But why was she crying? One fan told Reddit that they think Maggie sabotaged a launch on purpose. Sabotaging a military launch could be seen as terrorism, prompting her to an extended jail sentence. Seeing as Maggie didn't seem excited about Colorado, sabotaging a launch could have been her reason to get out of there.
Far-Fetched: Maggie Sold Secret Military Information
Would a woman married to a first general really sell top-secret military information? There are rumors that Maggie betrayed her husband and her country by leaking information accidentally or willingly.
This seems far-fetched, however. General Naird is devoted to his country and if Maggie did something as horrific as selling government information, it's highly doubtful he'd still be committed to her. It would also be a stretch for the POTUS to allow conjugal visits for Maggie and Mark if she did do this.
Makes Sense: Erin's Nickname Has Something To Do With Her Mother
According to Express, one fan thinks people at Erin's school call her "Scraps" because of something her mother did.
The problem is, what could Scraps be in relation to? Is it short for scraps of paper that Maggie sold or left behind? Did Erin or Maggie accidentally grab scraps of secret information, making her the butt of the joke with her mother in jail? Time will tell.
Far-Fetched: A Personal Vendetta Against POTUS
Did Maggie have something against POTUS? Was she upset that her husband was promoted and taking over a new branch of military defense, and thus wanted revenge? As a woman married to someone like General Naird for years, it's strange to think Maggie would deceive her husband by going after the President of the United States.
"My guess is that it was a personal offense against the president that got treated as treason," the fan told Reddit. But what separates her from others who've committed the same crime is her relationship with General Naird.
Makes Sense: The Crime She Committed Happened Before Colorado
Did Maggie commit a crime before Space Force? One fan told Reddit that they think Maggie was crying in bed at the end of the first episode because she knew her past would catch up to her now that her husband was in a position of power. Her tears were regretful because she knew her life would change forever. What that crime was, however, has yet to be determined.
Far-Fetched: She Tried To Kill POTUS
Just as it's far-fetched as it is that Maggie willingly sold top-secret information as the wife of a general, it's also unbelievable that she would have tried to kill the President of the United States. Maggie may be a little lost and lonely but would she really take her frustrations out on the life of a world leader? "I believe she was so upset about moving from DC to Colorado she tried to kill either the President or the Air Force chief of staff," a fan suggested.
The idea of Maggie having a vendetta against the Air Force chief of staff is more believable than the attempted murder of the president.
Makes Sense: She Took The Blame For Her Daughter
Maggie and Erin are completely different individuals at the start of Space Force than they are by the end. Both women were full of life and proud of Mark. They were colorful and smiley. But by the end of the pilot, they turned dark. Erin's fall from happiness is blamed on moving away from her friends but maybe it's because she's responsible for her mother's jail sentence. Perhaps that ties in with why her bullies call her "Scraps."
With her daughter being so young and innocent, Maggie could have taken the blame so her daughter could have a future.
Far-Fetched: Is Maggie A Doctor?
It's not said what Maggie did for work before she ended up in jail, or if she even worked at all. With General Naird working so much, having Maggie at home would have been helpful for Erin. Nevertheless, doctor. The theory goes that as a new doctor in Colorado, she "prescribed too [many] opioids." A drug offense could make sense when looking at the length of her jail sentence.
Makes Sense: Piracy
Did Maggie get caught up in piracy? One fan thinks Maggie wasn't crying in the pilot over something she did but because she was moving to Colorado. The Naird family created a life in DC and both Erin and Maggie didn't want to leave it behind.
Perhaps on the way to Colorado, Maggie panicked on the plane and made a bad decision as a way of getting out of the move. This calculated attack could have been enough to have her locked up while keeping General Naird employed.
Far-Fetched: DUI
It's not known if Maggie had a drinking problem. Viewers have only seen General Naird with a glass of wine, and even then he didn't want to drink too much because he had to be sharp enough to make intense decisions. But seeing as Erin got drunk at work as an 11th grader, maybe there was enough booze laying around from her mother. With Maggie being away for 40 years, she could have gotten herself in trouble with a DUI or a hit-and-run.
