Season 1 of Netflix series for season 2, which debuted on the streaming service in early May. There were tons of shocking moments and nail-biting episode endings that made it impossible to do anything but binge-watch the entire thing.
The first season ended when Jen and Judy found themselves in a pretty tricky and criminal predicament. Season 2 picks up right where that sordid event left off, and the events that follow are unbelievable.
So, what were the most shocking moments from the season? Fair warning: plenty of spoilers ahead.
Steve Is In The Freezer
It was pretty definitive that Steve was dead by the end of the season 1 finale. After being hit in the back of the head numerous times by Jen, he fell (or was pushed?) into her pool. Bloody and knocked out, he drowned. Or maybe he was dead before his body even hit the water.
The question we all had when Jen's neighbor Karen pulled back the pool cover to reveal clear and sparkling water was what happened to Steve? Turns out in haste, the ladies carried his body to a deep freezer in the garage and locked it in there.
Meeting Ben
The end of the first episode was a pure jaw-dropping moment. The ladies answered the door and it was…Steve? Jen was more puzzled than Judy, as the latter immediately knew that this wasn't Steve at all, but rather his twin brother, Ben. It was a huge surprise to see actor James Marsden back on the series when it was an almost certainty that his character was dead.
Charlie Goes For a Joyride
There was likely a collective "nooooo!" from viewers worldwide when Charlie opened the door to the storage unit, saw Steve's BMW, thought his mom had purchased it for him as a surprise for when he got his license, and drove it out of the unit. Not only that, but he dug around the car and handed a hat to his girlfriend Parker, who, he picked up so they could drive all over town, and park to, well... do what teenage kids do.
Parker Sends Her Instagram Photo To The Police
Was it really all that surprising that a teenage girl would do something like this out of revenge? Not really. But it was shocking nonetheless when Parker called the police to reveal the photos she had taken with Charlie and Steve's car, clearly showing its license plate.
She was bitter because Charlie broke up with her and started hanging out with another girl. But was it justifiable to get him in trouble with the law? Even after his mother paid $1,000 to get her to take the photos down?
Jen Hooks Up With Ben
The attraction was there from the beginning and it was clear Jen always though Steve was good-looking and thus would, by default, find Ben physically attractive, too. And he seemed to be taken by her, perhaps showing that opposites really do attract.
Eventually, the two gave in to their desires after one drunken kiss and slept together. It was a moment that wasn't all that surprising but shocking that Jen was able to go through with it nonetheless, especially since it seemed she could think of nothing else but what she did to Steve.
Jen and Judy Bury The Body
After Steve's frozen body started to attract rats in Jen's garage, she realized that she couldn't keep him there forever, and she needed to do something about it sooner rather than later. Like the great friends they are, Jen and Judy bravely got the body, put it in the trunk, and headed out to an area where Henry's creepy seemingly sociopathic friend suggested lots of dead bodies are dropped.
They spent six hours digging a hole, buried Steve, then headed to a hotel to clean up before going back home.
Judy Discovers Detective Perez is Michelle's Live-in Ex
After Jen told Judy that she needed some space and they can't spend every waking moment together, Judy struck up a friendship with Michelle, a woman who had just brought her mother to the retirement home where Judy works.
After their friendship blossomed into more, Michelle revealed that she still lives with her ex. Judy and Michelle shared a night of ion together and as Judy was making morning coffee, she ran into the roommate/ex in question... and it is none other than Detective Perez. What are the odds?
Jen Writes Letters To The Family And Confesses
In the end, seeing the walls closing in on her, Jen made the tough decision to take the blame for the crimes and it to what she did. She wrote letters for Judy and her two kids, went to Perez, and confessed.
Sure, Jen was miraculously released in Detective Perez's moment of comion. But the fact that she was willing to go to prison for what she did and leave Judy to care for her kids as legal guardian was huge.
Detective Perez Lets Jen Off
Arguably the most unbelievable moment of the season was when, after confessing to Detective Perez and heading out to the forest with her to show her where Steve is buried, Jen still got off with a slap on the wrist.
After swapping stories about their childhoods, bonding over how they both lost their mothers and Detective Perez feeling guilty about the idea of Jen's kids going into foster care like she did, she let her go. Sure, she had also just received news from Nick that the chief of police was involved in dirty dealings and they nabbed him. Still, this was a huge shock.
Charlie Finds The Letters
The season ended with Charlie sneaking into Judy's guest house and searching under her bed for where he's certain he'll find drugs in which he'd like to indulge. He founds exactly that in a box, along with the three letters Jen wrote to him, his brother Henry, and Judy.
We only saw him pick up the one letter to Judy, but it's safe to assume that he ended up reading all three of them. It was both a shock and a perfect cliffhanger to set things up for a next season, assuming there is one. How will Jen and Judy get out of this one?
