New Amsterdam came out of the gate with a strong cast of main characters, many of whom are still around as the show progresses through to its fifth and final season. But following the solid first season, the medical drama continued to introduce new characters that added to the stories.
Some of them are likable while others are villains, or fans are still trying to figure out what to make of them. But the one thing they all have in common is that they add a lot to the show and fans are excited to see how each of their stories might end.
Dr. Lyn Malvo
Fans still haven’t quite determined whether they like or dislike Dr. Malvo. She captured the heart of Dr. Reynolds, but his dreams were quickly squashed when he discovered she was married. Fans weren't thrilled about the situation that saw Dr. Reynolds dating Lyn behind her husband's back, even though they had an open marriage. It was the worst thing Dr. Reynolds did on New Amsterdam.
While fans expect to see more of Dr. Malvo now that it's confirmed that her baby is indeed Floyd's, fans are intrigued to find out where things will end up within the love triangle.
Dr. Veronica Fuentes
The best villain on the show to date, Dr. Veronica Fuentes has many layers. She is the only person to challenge Max in a way that he found himself unable to handle at times. This was because she had history with him and knew what buttons to push and which ones he would try to push back.
Seemingly focused solely on the bottom line with no regard for the actual patients the hospital is designed to serve, fans got a better idea of Dr. Fuentes' past from the flashback scenes. While fans still don't quite understand if she is a totally horrible person or just doing her job and really does care, it's clear fans can't wait to see her out so Max can get back his power.
Luna
Luna technically existed from the beginning, as Georgia was pregnant with her. But in later seasons, Luna had grown into a school-aged child with a personality of her own. This allowed fans to get to know her as a little girl.
From her biting tantrums at the hospital to her growing relationship with Dr. Helen Sharpe and the custody battle with the maternal grandparents, fans love mostly seeing the little girl's interactions with Max and how he handles being a single father to her.
Leyla
Leyla initially seemed like she might only appear in a few episodes, a ride share driver who picked up Lauren. But Lauren's discovery that Leyla was actually a doctor from her home country, unable to have her credentials recognized in the U.S., she went on a mission to help her. And the two fell in love.
Following the break-up and her short disappearance, which made Leyla one of the characters fans missed on New Amsterdam, Leyla returned. What fans love most about Leyla is her strength and perseverance, along with her medical skills that seemingly far sur some of the doctors on staff.
Dr. Claude Baptiste
Fans immediately felt for Dr. Baptiste when they discovered that he was Lyn's husband. While the couple made the decision together to have an open marriage, Lyn also went behind his back by starting a relationship with Floyd, someone they both worked with and knew.
A talented heart surgeon, Dr. Baptiste was immediately put into a difficult situation where he began to regret agreeing to the open marriage. Now part of a love triangle, and with a job offer in Denver while his wife just had another man's baby, the messy situation has fans interested in what's in store for not just him, but all three of them.
Dr. Elizabeth Wilder
One of the most compelling new characters, Dr. Elizabeth Wilder took Max's place as the new bold doctor ready to start a revolution in the hospital against Dr. Fuentes and her rules and decisions. She was the perfect person to lead the troops while Max was away and became a welcome member of the team of friends.
Fans love the story about her caring for her mentally illy brother while putting her own life on hold and how fabulous and confident she is at her job.
Dr. Cassian Shin
Dr. Cassian Shin didn't last long on the show, but it was refreshing to have a new, far more brash and direct doctor at New Amsterdam who had a colder, more pragmatic approach to treating patients. He started up a romance with Helen, and fans loved that seeing Helen with him gave Max a clue that he had deeper feelings for his close friend than he thought.
It was veteran actor Daniel Dae Kim who brought life to the recurring role that left fans wanting more, even if they preferred his character to be single so Helen could end up with Max. Fans indeed now believe that Max and Helen are relationship goals on New Amsterdam.
Gwen Bennett
Becky Ann Baker has an impressive resume in movies and television, so fans were happy to see her playing the character of Gwen Bennett, Georgia's mother and Max's mother-in-law. Her portrayal was raw and real as a woman who had just lost her daughter. Fans could relate to her as she struggled to help care for her new granddaughter while Max struggled to manage both his position at the hospital and being a single father.
While the storyline of she and her husband trying to fight for custody of Luna upset fans, the character herself is real and relatable.
PFC Chance Becker
One things fans love about New Amsterdam - and what makes it one of the best medical dramas on TV - is that it touches on the mental health side of the health equation as well. One of the most compelling cases was that of Chance, a young man who accidentally burned down his family home with his entire family inside.
But when he first talked with Dr. Iggy Frome and within the group, he was posing as a veteran instead, embarrassed to it what had really caused his trauma. The character's journey with Dr. Frome - one of the most likable characters on New Amsterdam - became so troubling that he drove Iggy to quit for a short time. The character's story arc was heartbreaking, terrifying, and eye-opening as to the effects of severe trauma and guilt.
Dr. Mia Castries
Dr. Mia Castries didn't exactly receive a warm welcome when she arrived at the hospital, hired by Dr. Veronica Fuentes to head up the holistic medicine practice. Since the focus of a medical facility should be, of course, on scientifically proven medicine, the doctors did not believe in what Mia was doing.
But they quickly realized that she was able to help patients in ways that they couldn't and there was value in what she was doing since some patients needed something more to help get them through pain and stress. She eventually proved herself and ally and a friend, which made fans do a complete 180 in of their feelings about the character.
