The classic Aquaman will be teaming up for a three issue mini-series titled Aquaman & The Flash: Voidsong, pairing up an unlikely duo as they fight against a shocking alien invasion, which only they have managed to evade. While Barry Allen and Arthur Curry have been fighting alongside each other in the pages of Justice League for decades, they have rarely had any solo team-ups, so it will be exciting to see how DC contextualizes their relationship.

DC Comics has been having a lot of success with alternate-universe team-ups of Justice League recently, such as the  DC Mech, but DC hasn't actually confirmed if Voidsong will be in main continuity or not. Additionally, both Aquaman 2 and The Flash DCEU films are debuting in theaters in 2022 so it is no surprise that DC is pushing out such a unique team-up comic. Arthur Curry and Barry Allen are such iconic superheroes that seeing the two fighting together against a terrifying alien invasion will surely lead to a lot of success for both their franchises.

Aquaman & The Flash: Voidsong - written by Colin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing with art by Vasco Georgiev and Rain Beredo - follows the two heroes after they escape an invasion by a mysterious alien species who are empowered with a dark cosmic force. The aliens emit a single musical note that is able to freeze all motion in its tracks. Barry escapes being frozen by the Voidsong because he is traveling through the Speed Force and Arthur is spared because he is swimming through the deepest ocean ravine on Earth, conveniently setting up the two to team-up as the last non-frozen beings on the entire planet. Check out the full synopsis of the mini-series below:

They descend suddenly from the stars, in monumental ships like floating cathedrals. They are touched by a dark and terrible force from beyond our reality, silent but for the one note they emit that freezes all motion. Their mission: to drain the Earth of all its kinetic energy and leave it a lifeless husk! AQUAMAN & THE FLASH: VOIDSONG by Collin Kelley & Jackson Lanzing (Green Arrow, Batman Beyond: Neo-Year), Vasco Georgiev (Batman: Urban Legends) and Rain Beredo will be published as a three-issue mini-series in June, July and August before being collected in paperback in October!

In the 56-page debut issue, they never expected anyone could escape their song—but the Flash was in the Speed Force when they struck, and Aquaman was in the deepest ravine far below the ocean’s floor. These heroes have little in common. They’ve rarely even fought side by side without their fellow Justice League . Now they must find a way to work together against impossible odds to save the world and the people they love!

Aquaman and The Flash Voidsong Team-Up Cover

The threat of the Voidsong is terrifying. The Flash's role in saving the day makes a lot of sense intrinsically, because he is connected to the Speed Force, the energy which gives kinetic motion to the universe. It has even been shown that the Speed Force is close to sentient, so it can be assumed it would not like what the aliens are attempting to do. Aquaman's role in the battle is less clear, while he is obviously a powerful hero, his powers do not immediately tie him to a specific way in which he could fight the aliens, but perhaps we will see him tapped into the Speed Force for the first time, or perhaps a Swim Force?! In another recent alternate reality mini-series, Aquaman and Green Arrow swapped bodies and powers, so perhaps this time Arthur Curry will be taking on the Flash's powers as well!

Barry Allen and Arthur Curry both have incredibly strong and stubborn personalities, so it will be interesting to see how writers Kelly and Lanzing portray their relationship and how they will partner with each other without the buffer of the Justice League they have usually had. This will certainly not be the very first time they have worked together solo, like in the 1993 mini-series Aquaman: Time and Tide from Peter David, Kirk Jarvinen, and Brad Vancata. Make sure to check out the massive 56-page Aquaman & The Flash: Voidsong #1 from DC Comics when it debuts on June 21st!
