DC's Luke Fox, but even before his first comics appearance, the Next Batman is showing no sign of having learned anything from the original.

Luke Fox is the current Batwing of the DC Universe, and the son of longtime Batman ally Lucius Fox, most notably played by Morgan Freeman in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy of films. While Luke has worked with Bruce Wayne in the past, he's more of a globetrotting hero than a Gotham-based vigilante, which might explain why he looks set to fall into all the same traps as the modern-day Batman; specifically, Bruce's inability to trust others, unwillingness to co-operate with authority, and tendency to over-prepare, especially in regards to gadgetry.

As far as gadgetry goes, little has been seen yet of the Next Batman's arsenal, but it's reasonable to assume that it's extensive. Both Batman weaponeer Lucius Fox (who is confirmed to have a strong connection to the hero) and Luke Fox (who fans suspect is under the cowl) are skilled inventors with a history of creating enhanced suits and vigilante weapons. Combined with the futuristic setting of Future State, it's therefore reasonable to assume this will be the most high-tech Batman ever seen in Gotham, and yet in Batman's own ongoing series, the Joker War has just proved why this is a bad idea. Bruce Wayne even recently itted that reliance on expensive tools has turned him into a worse Batman.

What about trust? Again, information is scarce, but readers know that the of Future State's Justice League are keeping their secret identities from one another. One of Batman's greatest failures occurred during the JLA "Tower of Babel" storyline (written by Mark Waid, with art by Howard Porter & Steve Scott), in which his distrust of his Justice League colleagues provided the team's enemies with Bruce-Wayne-approved measures for taking down Earth's heroes. But even outside of this event, Batman's constant inability to ask for help, or invest trust in others, has come back to bite him countless times.

Finally, there's Bruce Wayne's inability to work alongside traditional authority. While this was less of an issue once Batman created a relationship with Commissioner James Gordon, it's been shown countless times that it's only Gordon's flexibility that keeps Batman from being Gotham's Enemy Number One, as in the 2004-2005 crossover event War Games, in which Batman's attempts to bully Commissioner Akins leads to Black Mask seizing control of Gotham's underworld and the police being instructed to shoot anyone in a mask on sight. Yet again, the Next Batman is following in these footsteps, with their Future State adventure pitting them against private security firm Magistrate - a group who it's hinted rose to power following Bruce Wayne's failed tenure as the Bat.

Batman vs Akins

In each case, the Batman of Future State is justified in their actions - there's clearly a good reason the Justice League are being so secretive, and Magistrate certainly seem like bad news - but the cumulative effect is to strip away all the lessons Bruce Wayne has learned during his time as the Dark Knight. Whether or not the Next Batman is Luke Fox, hopefully they'll be a significantly different person to Bruce Wayne, or else Future State will confirm that far from saving Gotham, Batman's legacy is that of a damaged man who, rather than moving past his personal failings, just ed them on to the next generation.
