Last month, there was quite a bit of hype leading into DC FanDome about the next Gotham Knights, an action RPG where players will get to play as Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin instead of Batman.
Fans were caught off guard by the news that in Gotham Knights, Bruce Wayne is actually dead and not a playable character. On top of that, it was also announced that Rocksteady Games' set in the Arkham universe; a game in which players will likely end up fighting against Batman. The pairing of announcements made it clear that it's probably going to be a while before fans get to actually play as the Caped Crusader again.
It's been five years since the release of Gotham Knights' story and gameplay, but it can't be entirely ruled out either. If Gotham Knights sticks to the four characters that have been announced and nothing changes, a true Batman game will probably not be seen until 2023 at the earliest.
What Batman Is Doing In Suicide Squad's Game
It's also important to factor in Batman's involved in Suicide Squad. As the title suggests, because Batman is a member of the Justice League, there's a good chance that he will eventually be an enemy or boss of some sort in Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. For obvious reasons, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment probably doesn't want to release a Batman game around the same time that he's featured in Suicide Squad. A Batman game would overshadow any futures updates to Suicide Squad as well, which is set to launch in 2022, so that pushes the idea of a Batman game out even further, possibly to 2024. And none of that is factoring in any sort of delay.
The key factor here is going to be how well these games are received. If Gotham Knights is lost in the Arkham series' shadow and Suicide Squad is yet another poorly-received live service game, it would make sense for Warner Bros. to pivot and attempt to get a Batman game out earlier. Both of these titles would have to be massive failures for something like that to happen, and that's just not likely. Unfortunately, fans are probably not going to see a true Batman video game again until at least late 2023 or 2024 at the earliest, so it's going to be a while.
