Warning! Preview pages ahead for Metamorpho: The Element Man #4!DC Comics has just conceptualized a hero who is, without a doubt, someone who could make the most powerful hero the DC Universe has ever seen.

In a preview for Metamorpho: The Element Man #4 by Al Ewing and Steve Lieber, a flashback shows Simon Stagg nearly mugged in an alley. Fortunately, Stagg has a signal watch to the most powerful hero around. No, not Superman, but new hero on the block, Metamorpho II.

Metamorpho II reveals he can transform his body into any compound or alloy (not just those found in the human body like the original Metamorpho). Metamorpho II blasts the crook with copernicium vision, leaving him a pile of bones. However, this flashback is just a thought dreamed up by Simon Stagg.

DC Posits the Idea of the Superman-Level Hero, Metamorpho II

Though Imaginary, He's One of the Most Powerful Heroes Dreamed Up

Comic book cover: Metamorpho appears out of a comic cover.

The Man of Tomorrow may have some of the greatest powers in superhero fiction, the DC Universe is home to quite a number of mighty heroes. He might not always get the spotlight in the Justice League, but Metamorpho is a powerhouse unto himself. After being exposed to a cosmic artifact, Rex Mason was cursed and his body was irreversibly transformed. But while his body no longer resembles what it once was, Mason became able to transform into any state of matter and utilize every element found in the human body, allowing him to become the hero Metamorpho.

But for all the power Metamorpho has, he pales in comparison to his more heroic and handsome successor. Granted, Metamorpho II doesn't exist except in the imagination of Simon Stagg, but his daydream does show how a powerful hero like Rex could, in fact, be stronger than DC's ultimate hero if Mason's greatest limitation was removed. Metamorpho's transformations are limited to only what's found within the human body, but Metamopho II is a master of the periodic table. If Metamorpho II was real or if Rex found a way to overcome his limitation, Superman would have a true god-level rival.

Is Metamorpho II Ever Going to Be Able to Challenge Superman?

Or is the Man of Steel's Greatest Rival a Pipe Dream?

Metamorpho will be played by Anthony Carrigan in James Gunn's new DC Universe

Sadly, Metamorpho II is just a figment of Simon Stagg's imagination and, sadly for Rex, he's not overcoming his limitation anytime soon. But this is a good reminder of just how powerful Metamorpho's abilities really are. Rex is held back by only being able to work with a specific number of elements, but if that were to change, he'd basically have a mastery of life himself. If Metamorpho II were able to exist or if Rex could work around his limitation, there's no doubt that either of them would be a far more powerful hero than Superman.

Metamorpho: The Element Man #4 is available on March 26th from DC Comics.
